악명 높은 범죄 조직의 보스 클립핸즈의 아들을 살해한 혐의로 교도소에서 23년 형을 살았던 발렌타인(알 파치노)이 마침내 출소하자 클립핸즈는 발렌타인과 오래된 친구인 독(크리스토퍼 월켄)에게 그를 살해할 것을 지시한다. 제한시간은 단 하루! 23년 만의 어색한 재회를 한 두 사람. 독은 오랜만의 바깥 세상에 들뜬 발렌타인을 보면서 그에게 하루의 자유시간을 주기로 마음 먹는다. 마치 세상 두려울 것이 없던 젊은 시절로 돌아간 듯 일탈을 즐기는 발렌타인의 모습에 옛 추억의 향수를 느낀 독은 살해 계획도 잠시 잊은 채 그의 일탈에 동참하고, 낡은 요양원에서 남은 여생을 보내고 있는 옛 친구 허쉬(앨런 아킨)를 데리고 나와 셋이서 자유로운 광란의 밤을 보내기로 하는데…

전 세계가 치명적인 바이러스의 습격을 당하고, 그 누구도 안전하지 않고, 그 누구도 믿어선 안 되는 세계가 도래한다. 4명의 젊은이는 위기를 피해 멕시코만의 천국같은 해변으로 가려 한다. 하지만 그들의 차가 외딴 도로에 들어서고, 일련의 사건이 발생하면서 그들의 여행은 지옥같은 여정이 되어 버린다.

어렸을 때부터 친한 친구인 로미(미라 소르비노 분)와 미셀(리사 쿠드로 분)은 고교 졸업 후에도 같은 방을 쓰며 자유롭고 편안하게 살아가고 있다. 그녀들은 함께 놀러다니고 영화도 보고 나이트 클럽에도 같이 간다. 그러면서 "귀여운 여인" 같은 신데렐라를 꿈꾸며 멋진 남자를 상상한다.

1943년 LA 폭동이 일어났을 때 어머니 에스페란자가 해군에게 겁탈당해 태어나게 된 산타나는 그의 친구 2명과 함께 어려서부터 갱단을 조직하여 범죄를 저지른다.그러다 소년원에 수감된 그는 그곳에서 자신에게 성적 희롱을 가하던 다른 원생을 살해한다. 어른이 되어서도 교도소를 집처럼 드나들던 산타나는 교도소내에서 '멕시칸 마피아'를 조직, 교도소는 물론 거리의 갱세계까지 지배하며 범죄 세계의 보스로 군림하게 되는데...
