16세기의 영국 튜더 왕조의 국왕인 헨리 8세(King Henry VIII: 리차드 버튼 분)는 자신의 왕후인 앤 볼린(Anne Boleyn: 제네비에브 부졸드 분)을 처형하기 위해 재상 크롬웰(Thomas Cromwell: 존 콜리코스 분)이 가지고 온 문서에 서명을 하려고 한다. 영화는 서명을 하려는 헨리 8세가 자신이 앤과 결혼하기 위해 해왔던 일들을 회상하는데서 시작된다. 왕의 무도회. 프랑스에서 이제 막 돌아온 볼린가의 막내딸인 앤도 약혼자인 퍼쉬(Harry Percy: 테렌스 윌톤 분)와 무도회에 참석했다. 울지 추기경(Cardinal Wolsey: 안소니 쿼일 분)은 이 젊은 남녀의 결혼을 허락해 줄 것을 왕에게 간청하지만 아름다운 앤에게 이미 마음을 빼앗겨 버린 왕은 허락은 커녕 앤과 퍼쉬를 떨어뜨려 놓고 자신이 앤을 차지하려고 한다. 하지만 앤은 이미 왕에게 농락당해 아이를 가지고 있던 언니(Mary Boleyn: 발레리 거론 분)의 모습을 보곤 절대 왕의 여자가 되지 않겠다고 가족들에게까지 말하고 왕에게도 냉랭한 태도를 갖는다. 앤의 이런 싸늘한 태도에 왕은 더욱 더 매력을 느끼고 앤의 집에 머물며 그녀의 환심을 사려고 노력한다. 결국 앤의 안위를 걱정한 퍼쉬는 다른 아가씨와 결혼을 하고 앤은 괴로워한다. 앤의 계속되는 냉담한 반응에 왕은 캐서린 왕비의 시종으로 앤을 궁궐로 불러들이고 궁으로 옮긴 앤은 점점 권력과 사치의 맛을 배우게 된다. 하지만 왕의 애타는 사랑은 여전히 앤을 떠나지 않는다. 권력의 맛을 느끼게 된 앤은 왕에게 자신과 결혼하여 아들을 낳아주는 대신 자신이 영국의 왕비이여야 하며 자신의 아들이 왕위를 계승하게 해주어야 한다고 이야기한다.

독일군은 당시 중립을 지키고 있는 터키에 위협을 가해 전쟁에 끌어들이려 했다. 그들은 자신들의 힘을 과시하기 위한 장소로 터키에서 몇 킬로미터 밖에 떨어지지 않은 군사적인 가치도 없는 케로스라는 섬을 택한다. 독일 군대 중에서 최정예 부대가 출전할 준비를 끝내고 케로스의 영군 병사들은 대공세에 빠져나오지 못한다면 몰살당할 수 밖에 없는 상황이었다. 그러나 케로스로 가는 유일한 길은 그 근처에 있는 '나바론'이라는 섬의 두대의 거포가 막고 있었다. 최신 레이다 장비를 갖춘 두 대의 거포는 연합군의 어떠한 전함도 당할 수가 없었다.

1937년 남부 뉴올리언즈 주립정신 병원의 뇌 외과의사 쿠크로비츠 박사(몽고메리 클리프트)는 병원의 어려운 재정 때문에 모든 걸 포기하고 고향 시카고로 돌아가려고 하는데 그 동네의 부유한 미망인 베너블 부인(캐서린 헵번)은 자기 조카 캐서린(엘리자베스 테일러)에게 뇌수술을 해주는 조건으로 병원을 위해 막대한 돈을 기부할 것임을 제안한다. 식충식물을 좋아하는 베너블 부인에게는 세바스찬 이라고 하는 아들이 있었는데 지난 여름 아들과 조카 캐서린이 동행하여 여행을 떠나 그 여행에서 아들이 목숨을 잃었다. 한편 조카 캐서린은 사건 이후 정신이상 증세를 보여 아들의 죽음이 조카 캐서린의 정신이상 증세와 관련이 있지 않나 의심하며 한편으로는 아들이 동성애자였다는 사실이 밝혀질까 불안 해하며 쿠크로비츠 박사에게 빨리 뇌수술을 해 주기를 원한다. 쿠크로비츠 박사는 성 메리병원에 입원하고 있는 캐서린을 만나지만 그녀의 정신상태에 대해 진단해 본 결과 이상한 징후는 확인되지 않으나 캐서린이 굳게 입을 다물고 있고 세바스찬이 죽은 원인이 많은 영향을 주었다고 관찰되어 그녀를 주립병원으로 옮겨 기억을 되돌려 지난 여름 갑자기 세바스찬의 죽음에 대한 진상을 추적하기 위한 치료를 최상의 방법으로 대화를 계속하는데.
