연인을 폭행한 5명을 살해하고 도망다니던 야시로 텐슈는 연인인 하라 미사코까지 살해한 죄로 사형 선고를 받는다. 그러나 그는 사형 집행 과정 중 전기 의자에서 살아남아 생사를 선택할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 된다. 이미 서류상으로는 죽은 사람인 텐슈는 살아남기로 결정하고 주사를 맞는다. 의식을 잃었던 텐슈는 모든 것이 차단된 방에서 눈을 뜨고, 자신의 옆에 또 다른 사형수였던 곤도가 있음을 발견한다. 그 때 갑자기 어디선가 두 사람의 죄를 알려주는 목소리가 들려오고, 이어서 이제부터 그들이 행하게 될 실험에 대한 내용을 알려준다. 방 밖으로는 절대 나갈 수 없지만 원하는 것은 무기 이외에는 모두 주어진다는 것이다. 그들은 즉시 새옷과 식사를 주문하지만, 5일이 지나면서 서서히 식사에 제한을 받고 실온에 변화를 느낀다. 초조해진 곤도는 텐슈를 자극하고 위해 자신이 저지른 살인을 이야기하지만, 그가 반응하지 않자 오히려 텐슈를 공격하려 한다. 그러나 텐슈는 옷의 핀으로 곤도의 머리를 찔러 기절시키지만 죽이지는 않는다. 이 일로 인해 곤도는 텐슈에게 증오심을 가지게 되지만 텐슈는 이에 아랑곳 않고 연인과의 추억을 떠올리며 회상에 잠긴다. 관제실에서 두 사람의 사고력을 제한하기 위해 끊임없이 벨을 울려 정상적인 수면을 취하지 못한 가운데 텐슈와 곤도는 격리 9일째를 맞는다. 그러나 눈을 뜬 그들은 늘 닫혀있던 문이 열려있고, 그 건너편에 마녀라는 이유로 격리된 여자를 보게 된다. 여자는 텐슈와 곤도에게 상대를 죽이면 자신과 함게 있을 수 있다고 말한다. 순간 텐슈에게는 그녀가 자신의 연인이었던 미사코로 보이고, 곤도는 그녀를 폭행한 범인으로 보이게 된다. 그러나 이번에도 텐슈는 곤도를 죽이지 못했다. 이러한 상황에 오히려 당황한 것은 통제실에서 모든 것을 지켜보고 있던 연구원들이다. 도대체 텐슈는 어떤 실험에 참여한 것일까?
