버디(Buddy Young Jr.: 빌리 크리스탈 분)는 유명한 코미디언이었다. 그의 유머는 세인들에게 감동적인 웃음으로써 시사하는 바 컸다. 그러나 이제는 인기도 시들고 양로원이나 찾아다니며 공연하는 신사가 되었다. 그의 형 스탠도 자신의 삶을 찾아 그의 곁을 떠난다. 자신이 점차 퇴물이 되어간다고 느끼는 가운데 그에게 또다른 비극이 찾아온다. 사랑하는 어머니가 세상을 뜨게 된 것이다. 그러던 어느날, 헐리우드 최고의 감독이 자신은 버디의 열렬한 팬이라며 자신이 버디를 상상하며 연출한 영화의 주연을 맡아달라고 요청한다. 버디는 젊은날의 영광을 되찾아 재기할 것을 다짐하고 그의 요청을 받아들인다. 한편, 스탠은 또다시 버디의 매니저로 발목이 잡힌다. 그러나 버디는 갈등하게 된다. 감독은 처음 제의와는 달리 작은 역이라도 맡아 달라고 사정하나, 버디는 감독에게 욕설을 퍼붓는다. 이에 스텐은 버디의 독선적인 태도를 못마땅히 여기고 심하게 나무래는데...
