Even though Sami is safe in the United States with his 9-year-old daughter, Aya, the injures sustained during the war in Syria are making his life difficult. When news breaks that the rest of his family will arrive from a refugee camp, he should be as elated as Aya. But as Aya grows more eager to see her brother Saeed, Sami grows more anxious.

With his daughter's wedding quickly approaching, a Syrian deli owner, Amir, is struggling to let go. He distracts himself by joking and bickering with his employee, Ali, while they work the night shift. Down the street, a high school girl, Iris, lies to her father on the phone and prepares for a night of partying. When Iris and her friend Rachel meet a handsome stranger in Amir's deli, things don't go as planned. Reminded of his own daughter, Amir decides to help the girls out.

After a long separation, a sister and brother are reunited for a visit at an isolated lake house during an extremely cold winter. The sister, Yasmeen, has just arrived in the U.S. from their home country of Syria. Her brother, Omar, is a musician and has been in the U.S. for many years. He is coping with his own exile from his ex-wife and child, who have recently moved to another part of the country.
