양아버지인 홍화회의 총수 진가락을 따라간 방세옥은 홍화회의 일원으로 생활하는데, 세옥은 진가락이 청을 무너뜨리고 명을 복원하려는 야심을 품고 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 원래 진가락은 만주족으로, 건륭 황제의 친형제였지만 불안한 궁궐 생활을 염려한 어머니의 지혜로 어린 나이에 홍화회 총수의 손에 맡겨진 것이다. 어느 날 축하연에서 진가락이 괴한에게 습격을 받자 총수의 아들 우진해의 석연치 않은 행동이 드러난다. 호시탐탐 총수의 자리를 노리던 우진해에게 방세옥은 눈엣가시 같은 존재다. 한편 축하연이 있는 날, 양광총독의 딸 송화자가 세옥에게 연정을 품고 있다는 것을 안 진가락은 세옥에게 송화자를 유혹해 상자를 가져오라고 하는데. 방세옥은 그의 부인 정정과 홍화회에 가입한 후 첫 임무를 맡아 출동한다. 그 임무는 진가락의 출생 비밀이 담긴 상자를 일본인 손에서 뺏어오는 것이다. 그러나 화자의 방해로 함께간 사람들은 모두 죽고 방세옥은 어머니인 묘취화의 도움으로 구사일생 된다. 홍화회의 교주 우진해는 총 교주인 진가락에게 불만을 갖고 그의 양아들 방세옥을 죽이려 하지만 번번히 진가락의 만류로 실패하고 만다. 한편, 진가락은 화자가 방세옥을 좋아하는 것을 알고 방세옥을 보내 상자를 찾게 된다. 방세옥은 화자와 결혼하는 조건으로 상자를 손에 넣는다. 그러나 청나라의 대립관계에 있던 진가락이 청나라 황제와 친형제인 것을 안 방세옥은 이 비밀이 우진해에게 알려질 것을 막기위해 상자를 태워버린다. 이 일로 방세옥은 우진해의 모함을 받아 처벌을 받게된다. 또한 우진해는 방세옥의 어머니를 붙잡아 진가락의 비밀을 알아내고 진가락을 동굴에서 가둔다. 이것을 안 방세옥은 우진해 일파와 목숨을 건 혈투가 벌어진다
