On a dig in the remote Jordanian desert, maverick archaeologist Victoria Carter (Anna Friel) discovers an ancient scroll buried in the ruins of an old temple. It is encrypted with the location of the long lost Seal of Solomon, which, according to legend, was given to King Solomon by God himself. But this mighty treasure is also being sought by, amongst others, Victoria’s estranged father, renowned archaeologist Teddy Carter, who’s soon hot on its trail.

She is a scientist. He is a Lebanese doctor. They meet at a banquet and fall into a carefree, passionate relationship. But difficulties abound because of his heritage and her loveless marriage. She flies to Havana to sort things out on the beach and in the cabarets. She sends him a ticket, but harbors no illusions that He will join her in this Caribbean melting pot.

The film is set in Northern Ireland shortly after 1994 cease-fire. Hazel is a Protestant and Malachy a Catholic. Romance between them is threatened by Rohan (leader in militant underground and pal of Malachy's brother Padhar), who wants Malachy to be recruited and fight for the cause and by Hazel's brother Jef, who spies on her meetings.

아일랜드 한 작은 마을의 소작농인 조셉 도넬리(톰 크루즈)는 억울한 죽음을 당한 아버지의 임종을 지켜보며 분노를 느낀다. 조셉은 아버지의 원수를 갚기 위해 방황하다 우연히 한 마을에 들어선다. 하룻밤 노숙을 위해 대지주의 마굿간에 숨어든 조셉은 지주의 딸 샤논(니콜 키드먼)이 휘두른 삼지창에 찔려 부상을 당한다. 치료를 위해 샤논의 집에 머문 조셉은 샤논과의 대화에서 공감대를 찾게 된다. 그들은 함께 미국으로 탈출하기로 결심한다. 1892년 샤논의 몸종 형식으로 조셉은 보스턴행 이민선에 몸을 싣는다. 미국에서 샤논은 잡일을 하며 자신을 찾아가고, 조셉은 당시 횡행하던 논스톱 복싱경기 선수로 두각을 나타낸다. 하지만 둘은 서로간의 불신과 사고로 헤어지게 되고 몇 년의 세월이 흐른다. 그러던 중 체로키 레이스라는 신종 경주마 대회 경기에 출전한 조셉은 우연히 조우한 샤논의 도움으로 그토록 원하던 땅을 차지하게 되는데...
