The scheming prince of Qing poisons the rebels' central figure, Chi Zi Qiang (Jimmy Wang), and uses the antidote to force him to surrender. Being the hero that he is, Chi would rather cut off one of his own arms to save his life than submit to the prince. He then, single-armedly, defeats all the Manchurian minions...

한적한 시골 마을에서 마부 일을 하고 있는 청년 '중건(부성 분)' 은 의협심이 남달라 불의를 보고 참지 못하는 성격이다. 그래서 싸움을 자주 하게 되는데 마을 사람들은 싸움만 하는 중건을 고운 시선으로 보지 않고 오히려 원망하고 비난한다. 어느 날, 중건은 치한에게 폭행당할 뻔한 여성을 구해주고 그의 패거리와 엮이게 된다. 호시탐탐 중건을 죽이기 위해 기회를 엿보는 패거리들을 중건은 가볍게 무찌르지만 적의 우두머리 '봉천산(왕룡위 분)' 에게 그는 너무도 쉽게 지고 만다. 다행히 중건의 사부(산모 분)가 나타나 그를 죽을 뻔한 위기에서 구해주지만 또 다시 봉천산 패거리가 중건을 노릴 거라고 생각한 사부는 중건을 채리불권을 가르치는 소림사 스님에게 보낸다. 그리고 무관을 닫고 떠나려던 사부는 봉천산에게 죽고 만다. 중건은 소림사 스님 밑에서 채리불권을 열심히 연마하고 사부의 복수를 위해 봉천산을 찾아간다.
Peng Bu-yun
중원을 차지한 청나라는 무당파를 앞세워 연무대를 만들고 한족 무술인들을 제거해 나갈 음모를 꾸민다. 이런 결과로 수많은 한족 무술인들이 희생되었는데, 이 가운데엔 방세옥의 부친도 포함돼 있었다. 집안마저 풍비박산이 나고 원수들에 의해 쫓기는 신세가 된 방세옥은 복수를 위해 이를 악물고 동피철골공을 연마하게 된다. 동피철골공은 소림에서 은밀히 전해지는 비전으로, 일단 연마하게 되면 도검이 불침하게 되는 절정의 무공이다.

With only seven men stationing, these heroes took on the entire army for five days before succumbing. Chen Chang

Chien San
청나라 조정이 소림사를 불 질렀을 때, 채덕중, 마초흥, 방대홍, 이식개, 호덕제 다섯 명이 살아남았는데, 후세가 이들을 오조라 불렀다. 이들은 중원에 도착하자마자 적극적으로 반청 인사들과 연락하는데, 마초흥의 부주의로 행적이 노출되어 내부 첩자인 마복의에게 미행당하고 그를 믿었다가 감옥에 갇히는 신세가 된다. 이에 나머지 사조가 연천 부락의 촌장과 연합하여 동료를 구하던 와중에 촌장이 죽음을 맞는다. 이러한 상황에서 정의가 피가 끓어오르던 오조는 재차 반청 결의를 확고히 하고, 소림사로 돌아가 고된 수련을 이겨내면서 적을 무너뜨릴 무공을 연마하고, 결국에는 악당 모두를 섬멸하지만 애석하게도 방대홍과 이식개 두 명을 잃게 된다. 당시 홍콩 달러로 150만 이상의 수익을 벌어들이며 1974년 쇼브라더스 스튜디오의 최고 흥행작으로 등극하였던 작품. 소림을 배경으로 한 영화가 정점에 이르렀음을 보여주는 작품으로, 그 해 5대 흥행작 가운데 하나일 정도로 흥행에 성공을 거두었다. 제12회 대만 금마장 최우수 녹음상을 수상한 바 있는 이 작품은, 홍콩무협의 황금 콤비인 강대위와 적룡을 비롯, 부성과 척관군이 주연해 현란한 쿵푸 실력을 선사하고 있다.
