서아프리카에서 가장 큰 코트디부아르의 교도소 마카. 소매치기로 수용된 17세 청년은 첫날부터 두목 검은 수염의 부름을 받는다. 검은 수염은 청년을 다짜고짜 ‘로마인(Roman)’으로 지목하고 밤에 ‘붉은 달’이 떠오르면 모든 수감자에게 어떤 이야기든 밤새 들려줄 것을 명한다. 붉은 달이 떠오르자 소년은 살아남기 위해 자마왕에 대한 이야기를 술술 풀어나간다. 코트디부아르는 근 20년간의 내전으로 정치와 경제, 치안이 여전히 불안한 상태다. 어린 시절 실제 마카에 수감된 엄마의 면회를 다녔던 경험에서 영감을 받은 감독은 마카라는 프리즘을 통해 전쟁 후의 코트디부아르 사회를 직시한다. 앤틱한 분위기와 붉은 달, 아프리카 태초의 몸짓이 어우러져, 감옥은 환상의 공간으로 거듭난다. 주인공이 불러온 감옥 밖의 이야기는 폭력과 신화의 이미지로 가득하다. 유일한 백인 수감자 드니 라방의 출현 또한 작품에 신비함을 더한다.

Adanggaman
In West Africa during the late 17th century, King Adanggaman leads a war against his neighboring tribes, ordering his soldiers to torch enemy villages, kill the elderly and capture the healthy tribesmen to sell to the European slave traders.
