텍사스의 작은 마을. 이곳은 석유 재벌 발 로저스가 모든 것을 장악하고 있는 곳이다. 강직한 성품의 보안관 칼더는 마을 사람들이 자신을 발의 앞잡이로만 여기는 것을 탐탁치 않게 여긴다. 그러던 중 감옥에서 버바 리브스가 탈출 하고 마을 사람들 중에는 리브스와 얽혀진 갖가지 추악한 과거들이 드러나길 원하지 않는다. 특히, 발은 아들 제이크가 리브스의 아내와 불륜의 관계에 있는 것을 알고 아들에게 해가 될까 두려워한다. 멕시코로 도망하려던 리브스는 실수로 고향으로 되돌아 오게 된다. 칼더의 임무는 리브스를 온전히 감옥으로 돌려 보내는 것이지만 마을은 이미 술과 광기로 미쳐가고 칼더는 집단 린치를 당하게 된다. 가까스로 리브스를 보안관 사무실로 데려오지만......

미군 상병 킹(Corporal King: 조지 시걸 분)은 미군과 영국군, 호주군이 함께 수용되어 있는 연합군 전쟁 포로 수용소에서 암시장을 꾸려나가고 있다. 다른 포로들이 비참한 생활을 하는 동안 킹은 자신이 빼돌린 물품으로 주변 인물들을 자기 마음대로 부린다. 한편 킹은 영국 장교 피터 말로우(Peter Marlowe: 제임스 폭스 분)가 원주민과 대화를 하는 모습을 보고 그를 끌어들여 좀더 돈을 챙기려 한다. 말로우는 킹이 일본 장교들과도 장사를 할 수 있도록 그의 구역을 넓혀주고 두 사람은 서로 공생하며 우정을 키워간다.

Passengers on a ship traveling from Mexico to Europe in the 1930s represent society at large in that era. The crew is German, including the ship's Dr. Schumann, who falls in love with one of the passengers, La Condesa. A young American woman, Jenny, is traveling with the man she loves, David. Not quite as memorable as his previous Riders in the Sky, Gene Autry's Sons of New Mexico is still well up to the star's standard. This time, Gene tries to reform Randy Pryor, a would-be juvenile delinquent, played by Autry-protégé Dick Jones (who later starred in the Autry-produced TV series Range Rider and Buffalo Bill Jr). To this end, Pryor is enrolled at the New Mexico Military Institute, where much of this film was lensed. The kid chafes at the school's regimen and escapes, heading back to his criminal mentor Pat Feeney (Robert Armstrong).
