1939년 뉴올리언스에 주인공 찰리는 그의 친구 이치의 도움을 받아 시립 형무소에서 탈출하면서 시작된다. 찰리는 탈출 후 동업자인 카페이스와 같이 경영하는 도박장으로 돌아가지만 카페이스가 사업을 독차지 하기위해 찰리를 함정에 빠트리고 결국 부하의 도움을 받아 그를 죽인다. 찰리는 천국에서 천사인 헤븐리 위펫의 시계를 훔쳐 카페이스에게 복수하기 위해 지상으로 내려가고 카페이스가 가두어둔 동물의 말을 알아듣는 앤 마리를 이용해 돈을 벌려고 경마장으로 간다. 찰리는 경마장에서 젊은 부부의 지갑을 훔쳐내지만 앤 마리는 그런 찰리에게 화를 내며 젊은 부부에게 지갑을 돌려주러 간다. 앤 마리가 입양될 것 같은 상황이 되자 찰리는 앤 마리를 그곳에서 데리고 나온다. 앤 마리는 찰리가 돈 때문에 자신을 이용하려 했다는 사실을 알고 젊은 부부를 찾아나서지만 카페이스에게 납치된다. 찰리는 앤 마리를 구출하려고 카페이스 일당과 격투를 벌이다가 줄에 묶인 채 물에 던져져 익사할 위기해 쳐한다. 앤 마리를 구하기 위해 찰리는 생명시계를 포기하고 앤 마리는 구출되지만 찰리의 생명시계는 멈추고 만다.

무대극으로도대호평을 받았던 윌리 러셀의 작품을 충실하게 화면에 옮긴 수작. 이 작품은 국내 공연에서도 호평을 받은 바가 있다. 유명한 연극의 영화화이면서도 여러모로 이색적이기도 하다. 원작의 분위기를 크게 해치지 않으면서도 영화만이 가질 수 있는 특성을 잘 살려서 작품화시켰으며, 007 시리즈를 비롯하여 오락성강한 영화들의 대가였던 길버트 감독이 의외로 차분하고 정감어린 연출솜씨를 보여주었다. 그는 그 후로도 이라는 여성 무대극의 영화화를 맡았다. 관록의 명우 마이클 케인이 최고의 연기를 보여준 작품이기도 하지만, 거칠기 짝이 없는 런던 사투리를 종횡무진으로 구사하며 그를 압도한 주연여우 줄리 월터스는 이 작품이 영화 데뷔작이면서도 무대를 성공으로 이끌었던 연기력을 마음껏 발휘했다. 비록 에서 열연한 셜리 맥크레인에게 수상은 빼앗겼지만, 아카데미 여우주연상 후보에도 올랐다. 정말 매력이 넘치는 역할이었다. 자신감을 잃고 방황하는 영문학 교수와 무언가 새로운 인생을 개척해 보려고 개방대학을 지원한 젊은 주부 직장여성과의 인간적인 교류가 따뜻하게 펼쳐지면서, 삶의 의미를 다시 한 번 생각하게 해준다. 과연 인간의 진정한 가치는 무엇으로 판단할 수 있는가? 하는 문제에 대해서 이 영화는 통속적인 판단기준을 단호히 거부하고, 소위 지식인이라는 사람들의 위선을 통렬히 고발하고 있는 것이다. 전자음악의 대가인 데이빗 헨첼의 음악도 일품이다.

The lyrics tell the story of Arthur McBride (Paul Bennett) and his cousin (Paul Wilson) who fight off a recruiting sergeant (Godfrey Quigley) when he tries to enlist them in the British army.
