충량(장국영)은 부모를 잃고 누나(하새비)가 살고 있는 팡가에서 같이 지내게 된다. 그러나 아편 중독자인 매형은 그에게 아편 시중을 들게 할 뿐만 아니라 누나와 성적 관계를 맺게 하려 한다. 아편에 취한 누나 또한 충량을 유혹하고 충량은 죄책감에 시달리다 매형의 아편에 비상을 넣어 식물인간이 되게 한 후 팡가를 떠난다. 북경행 열차에 몸을 실은 충량은 폭력배의 보스를 만나 상해에 내린다. 당시 국제 도시로서의 면모를 과시하던 상해는 아편 향기와 홍등가가 도시를 뒤덮고 있었다. 충량은 유한마담을 유혹한 후 협박, 갈취하는 지골로로 명성을 날리나 어린 날의 상처로 인해 어느 여자도 사랑할 수가 없다. 팡씨 일가의 후계자 지명을 놓고 충량의 보스는 그를 팡가로 보내 류이(공리)를 유혹하게 한다. 여자에게만은 철저한 프로임을 자처했던 충량은 류이에게 진심으로 사랑을 느끼자 혼란에 빠지고, 성적 욕구불만과 질투의 화신이 된 충량의 누나가 집안을 폭풍같은 감정의 소용돌이 속으로 몰아가자 충량은 다시 상해로 떠나게 된다.

In 1949, the Communists take over mainland. The refugees and the military arrive in the Keelung Harbor in Taiwan. While the father holds secret meetings with other generals in attempt to recover the lost land, the kids still play games with their grandma who still enjoys the harmony and peace in hardship. Gradually, it seems that there was no hope to fight back the fatherland. The general turned father has to run a small business to support the family. He encounters a series of struggles. And finally his kids grow up.

Xia-dou and Ji-dan left their families and friends in Thief Village to sit in a dungeon as subsitute prisoners in exchange for favor from the local law enforcer. The warden, knowing they are good in physical skills, sent them on a side job. The kids broke in a heavily guarded examination ground, swapped two exam papers for the client and stole a pair of golden eyes from a big lion chop for themselves. The missing gold detoured the detective's trail to the master schemer. As the conspiracy unfolded, the governor decided to eradicate the whole village to cover up his involvement with the master schemer. Life in Thief Village has never been easy. But fate never mocked them so hard. It turned out that the gold they so cherished was fake. So were many other things they believed in. In despair, Xia-dou's Great grandfather, the 125-year old personage called upon the sky and recevied a most fantastic answer.

Door Latch also looks after his old pal Lee Der-Sherng when Lee loses his mind. However, the KMT government released the restriction to visit Mainland China. They are able to visit their parents and relatives there. Their son finds "their" parents, but bigger secrets will unfold.

The story focuses on four high school students, Yang Jialuo, you Fusheng, Gu Caizi, Guo Hao and Liu Guobao. In the film, they narrate and reflect on their growth with witty dialogue.
