Set in rural Ireland. Believing that "a man is measured by his enemies", Harry Maloney (Colm Meany) sets out to ruin George O'Flaherty – the most powerful man in town, who not only owns the local pub and most of the businesses in the area, but is also the local matchmaker. When Harry's son Gus (Cillian Murphy) – upon whom Harry regularly heaps abuse (mostly mental and verbal) – falls for the lovely Eileen, George helps get the two together. During this time, Harry quietly mobilizes his dastardly plans.

When the spirited Young Mistress (Wang Lan) is kidnapped on the way to her arranged wedding, the groom is killed in an explosion in an attempt to rescue her. The peasant charged with her care, Kui (Chang Shih) manages to free her but the groom's bitter mother forces the Young Mistress to honor her agreement by marrying a wooden statue of her son, and staying chaste. Niu Er is a peddler who provides for the widow Gan Cao and her mother and son. Gan Cao sews and cooks for Niu Er but is reluctant to get close to him, because she is in love with Ba Dun, a gambler.

Men Sheng (Li Lei) may be constantly getting into trouble because he speaks up when he shouldn't, but he's far from stupid. It's just that he has a lot to say, and says it incessantly. However, when his family runs into trouble, the young chatterbox manages to sort things out. His father is the village treasurer, and though he has only been accused of embezzling, the villagers have already ostracized him and everyone in his clan, without giving him a chance to clear his name or be properly convicted. Some other family difficulties set village tongues wagging, too, but Men Sheng, whose nickname is "Chatterbox," soon sets them wagging in the right direction.

임종의 아버지에게서, 하서성 쌍기진에 가면 부쓰라는 사람이 있고, 그의 딸이 자기의 약혼자라는 얘기를 들은 하이거라는 소년은 광대한 사막을 가로질러 찾아간다. 옛 성터에 바위에 달라붙은 이끼처럼 붙어있는 그곳은 살벌한 고장이었다. 검객들이 득실거리고 피를 흘리는 일이 다반사였다. 그러나 아버지에게서 검술을 배운바 있는 하이거는 별로 두려운 생각없이 부쓰를 찾아내지만, 전혀 반기지 않는다. 그러던 어느날, 하서성 일대에서 가장 강한 일도선이라는 검객의 동생이자 그 무리의 부두목이 하오메이를 능욕하려는 것을 본 하이거가 그를 단칼에 베어버리는 사건이 일어난다. 쌍기진의 주민들은 물론 부쓰나 하오메이도 일도선의 보복이 두려워 공포에 떤다. 부쓰는 하이거와 하오메이를 데리고 도주하려 하지만 마을 사람들의 방해로 단념한다. 마을 사람들은 일도선이 복수하러 나타났을때 하이거의 일층도법이 일도선을 무찌르거나, 일도선의 칼에 죽어서, 마을이 입을지도 모르는 유혈을 극소화하자는 것이었다.
