다리가 조금 불편한 공대생 톰마소(세르지오 루비니 분)는 강의를 마치고 늦게 돌아오는 길에 횡단보도에서 갑자기 뛰어든 금발의 여인을 자동차로 치게 된다. 가벼운 외상을 입은 그녀는 바로 병원으로 실려가고 이에 걱정된 톰마소는 병원으로 찾아간다. 그리고 다음날 비온다라는 이름의 그녀가 그의 집을 찾아와 자신이 누군지도 모른다며 자신의 기억상실증을 호소하면서 도와 줄 것을 간곡히 부탁한다. 그녀의 잊혀진 기억을 되찾기 위해 둘이는 사고 현장을 하나씩 더듬어 가지만 번번히 실패로 끝난다. 톰마소와 비온다는 서로 사랑을 하게 되고 즐거운 나날을 보낸다. 어느날 길을 걷다가 갑자기 기억을 되찾게 된 그녀는 말 한마디 없이 톰마소를 떠나 버린다. 그녀를 잊지 못하는 톰마소는 그녀가 주고간 시계의 이니셜로 전화번호를 찾아내 전화를 걸지만 그녀는 냉냉하기만 하는데.

When he sees cousin Marta at a train station one day, he jumps off his train, talks to her for awhile, and tries to give her some strength to face the various problems in her life. Both Marta and Tommaso suffer deceptions over the next crucial period -- Marta becomes estranged from her husband, and her daughter is more distant with each passing day.

The next day they all plan to drive to Venice where his sister sang opera in her youth for a holiday. Fate intervenes.
19세기 이탈리아의 귀족사회. 웰시 툴리오(지안카를로 지아니니)는 그의 친구들과 일반 사람들이 보는 곳에서 그의 정부인 테레사(제니퍼 오닐)을 에스코트하는 것을 아무렇지도 않게 생각한다. 그는 단 한 순간도 자신의 욕망을 만족스럽게 채우지 못한다. 반면 부인 줄리아나(라우라 안토넬리)는 그런 남편으로 인해 계속 고통에 시달린다. 그런데 사실상 툴리오와의 관계가 끝나다 시피한 부인 줄리아나가 젊은 소설가와 사귀게 됐을 때 툴리오는 복잡한 심경이 된다. 이후 아내가 다른 사람의 아이를 임신했다는 사실을 받아들일 수 없게 되자, 툴리오는 결국 자살을 결심한다.
