Almost immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the era of "market relations"begins. Capitalism is re-emerging in the country. It is time for redistribution of property and spheres of influence between criminal groups. War breaks out between gangs, in the ranks of which are often former athletes. Especially appreciated are those who have the skills of martial arts. At this time, a group of children who profess a rare kind of hand-to-hand fighting, called "Russian style", comes to one provincial city. Their appearance greatly alarmed the leaders of the two rival gangs controlling the city. They are trying to get these valuable fighters into their ranks. In the course of going any means, and the guys are forced to defend themselves.

Afghanistan. 1986. From the border towards Kabul on a mountain road moving column of Soviet military armored vehicles. From the air it is covered by combat helicopters. The way of the column lies through the only bridge in these parts. This is well aware of the Afghan Mujahideen and under the leadership of American instructors are preparing an operation to capture the bridge and destroy the Soviet equipment blocked in this case. At this time, located in the mountains of the Soviet geological expedition undergoes a night attack spooks. The Afghan guards scatter and the geologists decide to go to Kabul. 안드레이 플라토노프의 "포투단 강"과 "주인의 기원 (The Origin of a Master)"을 각색해 만든 소쿠로프의 장편 데뷔작. 러시아 혁명 당시 적군 소속으로 활동했던 니키타는 고향으로 돌아온다. 그리고 혁명과 전쟁으로 가족을 잃은 어릴 적 친구 류바와 친해진다. 10월 혁명에 대한 비판적인 시선이 녹아 있다는 이유로 정부에 의해 오랜 기간 개봉을 금지당했다.
