Les inconnus de la terre starts like a traditional feature film: in the beginning of the film all the leading roles are given a short introduction. This is followed by a number of interviews, in which the makers unashamedly appear themselves. They include an interview with a lonely shepherd and one with three unmarried brothers who try to run the parental farm for better or worse. Notwithstanding the fact that this mode of interviewing has now become classical, les inconnus de la terre works rather refreshingly. The film is more than just an enumeration of problems. In an honest way it shows the ties of those involved to the land and to nature, in addition to being a plea for the modernization of French agriculture.

An intimate window into one of the great movements in film history that brought about an evolution in the art of cinema. The documentary portrays the movement with insight on the lives and works of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut and other principal players in the New Wave.

여행 도중 잠시 들린 나이트클럽에서 아름다운 여인을 만난 월터는 그녀를 한참 동안 바라본다. 차를 타고 다시 길을 향하던 월터는 방금 전의 그 여인이 피를 흘리며 길에 쓰러진 것을 보고 서둘러 병원에 데리고 간다. 그후 여인과 사랑을 나눈 월터는 꿈인지 현실인지 모를 기묘한 꿈을 꾸고, 다음 날 아침 자신의 목에 난 이빨 자국을 발견한다.

산골마을을 넘어서 일터를 향해 가는 인력거의 발걸음이 분주하면 분주할 수록 집으로 돌아오는 그의 지친 몸은 천근 만근이다. 술 한잔으로 피로를 달래 보지만 역시 아내와 잠자리를 갖기에는 무리다. 젊은 아내는 아직도 팽팽한 육신으로 아기의 젖만 물릴 수 없었던지 마을의 낯선 남자와 정을 통하고 만다. 한 번 정을 통하게 된 이들은 수시로 관계를 갖게 되고, 이제는 걸림돌이 된 남편을 죽이려 한다. 부인은 술로 남편을 취하게 한 다음 정부와 함께 남편을 목졸라 죽인다. 그리고 남편의 시체를 숲 속 우물에 버린다. 남편의 죽음은 실종으로 처리되고 두 남녀의 사랑 행각은 계속 이어진다. 하지만 아버지를 찾는 딸 아이와 남편을 찾기 위해 호시탐탐 부인의 주변을 맴도는 순사로 인해 여자의 죄의식이 점점 고개를 든다. 그리고 그 죄의식은 남편의 망령을 통해 점점 거세화된다.

나가노의 요리점 <요시다야>에서 일하는 여종업원인 사다는 그 곳에서 주인인 이시다 기치조를 만나게 된다. 그녀는 순식간에 그와 격정적인 정사를 나누고픈 욕망에 빠져든다. 첫눈에 반한 두 사람은 늦은 밤 응접실이나 객실 등에서 지속적으로 밀회를 나누다가 기치조의 아내에게 발각된다. 결국 사다는 요리점을 나갈 수 밖에 없는 상황에 놓이자 기치조의 부인을 속이고 도망을 나와 요정 마사키에 틀어박혀 격렬한 사랑을 수 차례 나누게 된다. 두 사람의 사랑은 애정을 넘어서 서로의 육체에 대한 집착으로 나타나고, 결국 사다는 기치조를 영원히 자신의 남자로 만들고 싶다는 욕망에 사로잡히게 되는데...

어떤 금기도 넘고야 마는 욕망에 대한 네 개의 우화들. 사촌의 은밀한 소원을 들어주려는 소녀의 이야기, 자신의 성적 욕망과 종교적 신념 사이에서 고민하는 여성, 영원한 젊음을 얻기 위해 금기를 깨트리는 귀족, 종교 의식을 위해 근친상간을 하는 남녀의 이야기가 파격적인 이미지 속에 차례로 펼쳐진다.

많은 사람들이 이 작품을 로베르 브레송의 대표작이자 걸작 중 하나로 꼽는다. 그만큼 이 영화는 브레송이 일생 동안 만든 '시네마토그라피'(단순히 '시네마'가 아니라)의 대표적인 특징들을 고스란히 담고 있다. 병든 엄마와 아직 갓난아이인 동생을 돌봐야 하고, 의붓아버지에게 학대받으면서 학교에서도 철저하게 소외되는 한 소녀가 있다. 이 소녀에게 찾아오는 평범하지 않은 갑작스러운 사랑과 연이은 엄마의 죽음. 그리고 결국 종국에 맞닥뜨리게 되는 소녀의 자살. 단순한 스토리라인은 배경음악이나 연기, 카메라워크에 의한 어떠한 감정적인 조장도 없이 단선적이고 건조하게 진행된다. 거기에다 부엌에서 그릇이나 식기를 다루는 소녀의 손과 같은 무의미한 듯하지만 범상치 않은 신체 일부의 클로즈업이 곳곳에 배치되어 있다. 브레송은 눈물샘을 자극하는 감각적인 영화가 아니라, 마치 손으로 만지는 것 같은 촉각적인 영화를 만들어내었다. 지금까지 대면해온 영화들 속에 어떤 식으로도 포섭되지 않는 이 영화를 보면서 그 익숙하지 않음이 오히려 소름끼치고, 눈물을 보일 수 없도록 만들지만 미어지게 가슴이 아픈, 흔치 않은 감동을 경험하게 될 것이다.

Documentary on the beginnings of Algerian independence filmed during the summer of 1962 in Algiers. The film was banned in France and Algeria but won the Grand Prize at the Leipzig International Film Festival in 1965. Out of friendship, the production company Images de France sent an operator, Bruno Muel, who later declared: "For those who were called to Algeria (for me, 1956-58), participating in a film on independence was a victory over horror, lies and absurdity. It was also the beginning of my commitment to the cinema."

In 1962 Joris Ivens was invited to Chile for teaching and filmmaking. Together with students he made …À Valparaiso, one of his most poetic films. Contrasting the prestigious history of the seaport with the present the film sketches a portrait of the city, built on 42 hills, with its wealth and poverty, its daily life on the streets, the stairs, the rack railways and in the bars. Although the port has lost its importance, the rich past is still present in the impoverished city. The film echoes this ambiguous situation in its dialectical poetic style, interweaving the daily life reality (of 1963) with the history of the city and changing from black and white to colour, finally leaving us with hopeful perspective for the children who are playing on the stairs and hills of this beautiful town.
