Old Mexican-American sheriff Bob Valdez has always been a haven of sanity in a land of madmen when it came to defending law and order. But the weapon smuggler Frank Tanner is greedy and impulsive. When Tanner provokes a shooting that causes the death of an innocent man and Valdez asks him to financially compensate the widow, Tanner refuses to do so and severely humiliates Valdez, who will do justice and avenge his honor, no matter what it takes.

A Michigan farmer and a prospector form a partnership in the California gold country. Their adventures include buying and sharing a wife, hijacking a stage, kidnapping six prostitutes, and turning their mining camp into a boom town. Along the way there is plenty of drinking, gambling, and singing. They even find time to do some creative gold mining.

Maxwell Slaughter is a kind, heavyset guy who has reached the rank of master sergeant in the army. Admired by handsome young Sgt. Eustis Clay, Slaughter forms a close bond with his peer. Clay hopes to convince Slaughter to join him in a business venture outside of the service, but, in the meantime, he introduces the older officer to the beautiful young Bobby Jo Pepperdine, inadvertently creating trouble for both men.

종교와 인종에 관계없이 믿음을 주제로 한 영화로 부담 없이 즐길 수 있는 작품. 스크린 가득히 퍼져나오는 인간애와 믿음에 관한 질문과 대답은 이 작품이 훌륭하다거나 최고라는 느낌을 주지는 않는다. 다만 인간 본질의 신념을 얘기한 볼만한 작품으로 여겨질뿐. 이 영화는 로드무비는 아니다. 하지만 바람에 흩날리는 갈대처럼 길이 놓인 곳이면 어디든 떠날 것 같은 주인공 스미스의 연기가 로드무비를 연상케한다. 이 영화는 공간의 미가 흠뻑 살아있고, 테마 음악 "Amen"이 잔잔한 감동으로 전해온다. 시드니 포이티어가 아카데미 남우주연상을 수상함으로써, 흑인으로는 최초로 아카데미 주연상을 수상한 작품이다. 당시 38세의 나이로 진솔하고 깔끔한 연기를 끄집어내 흑인이 아닌 이들로부터도 폭넓은 관심을 끌게 된다. 이로써 아프리카계 미국인의 이미지가 조금씩 향상된 계기를 마련하게 된다. 자유로운 몸이 된 퇴역군인 '호머 스미스'는 아리조나를 여행하던 중 다섯명의 수녀를 만나게 된다. 그들이 동독을 탈출한 도망자들이며 영어를 할 줄 모른다는 것을 알게 되지만 하루 동안의 노동을 제의하고 수녀들도 받아들이게 되는데, 그러나 일이 끝났을 때 수녀들은 급여를 주는 대신 음식과 따뜻한 마음을 전하고, '호머'는 감동을 받아 정착해 그들을 돕기로 결심한다. 마을 사람들이 그를 보고 비웃었지만 '호머'는 묵묵히 예배방을 짓기 위해 일했고 감동받은 사람들도 그를 도와주게 된다.
