When troubled teen boy Stevie (Cameron Van Hoy) and his girlfriend, Rocky (Mischa Barton), attempt to rob a bank without any forethought, the situation rapidly deteriorates. Soon the young couple is holding bank customers and employees hostage, while law enforcement gathers outside. Daniel Bender (Burt Reynolds), a veteran negotiator for the FBI, is charged with assessing the crime scene and ending the standoff as quickly as possible, but Stevie's short fuse considerably complicates matters.

The drivers of the two cars challenge each other, and a wild race starts that ends up with a horrifying accident. A fictional film, it dramatizes a situation where pride, alcohol and wheels combine with disastrous results.

This day-in-the-life cult comedy focuses on a group of friends working at Sully Boyar's Car Wash in the Los Angeles ghetto. The team meets dozens of eccentric customers -- including a smooth-talking preacher, a wacky cab driver and an ex-convict -- while cracking politically incorrect jokes to a constant soundtrack of disco and funk. Some of the workers find romance as the day moves along, but most are just happy to get through another shift.

약 1948년경의 미국. 직업군인인 웰던(말론 브란도) 소령과 레오노라(엘리자베스 테일러)는 부부지만 썩 사이가 좋지 못 하다. 잠재적인 동성애자라 할 수 있는 웰던은 아내와 성관계를 갖지 못하는 상태고, 자유분방한 레오노라는 사람들 앞에서 그를 면박 줄 정도다. 레오노라는 웰던의 동료이자 이웃에 사는 모리스(브라이언 키스)와 불륜 관계에 있다. 평소 아내에 대한 불만으로 가득 차 있던 웰던은 그녀가 타고 다니는 말을 잔인하게 때려서 해소한다. 한편, 웰던이 가르치는 학생이자 군인인 윌리엄스(로버트 포스터)는 밤마다 몰래 레오노라를 훔쳐본다. 급기야 레오노라의 방에 몰래 들어가 속옷을 만지작거리며 은밀한 상상에 빠지기도 한다. 하지만 웰던은 평소 그를 눈여겨보면서 성적 정체성의 혼란에 빠진다. 급기야 자신이 흠모하던 윌리엄스가 사실은 자신의 아내를 남몰래 사랑하고 있다는 사실에 큰 충격을 받는다.
