Set in Tokyo, Japan near the end of World War II. 19-year-old Satoko (Fumi Nikaido) lives with her mother (Youki Kudoh) and her aunt. The war is turning more grave. Even though Satoko is near the age to get married, she can't even think of marriage due to the unstable situation. Satoko then begins to communicate with her neighbor, Ichikawa (Hiroki Hasegawa). He has avoided military service due to failing his physical test. As Satoko communicates with Ichikawa, she begins to awake as a woman.

도쿄 외곽의 가쓰라가와 계곡 인근 마을, 자신의 아이를 살해한 혐의로 사토미가 체포되면서 이야기는 시작된다. 그러나 친자 살인의 내력을 따라 진행될 것처럼 보였던 이야기는 별안간 그 이웃에게로 초점을 옮긴다. 슌스케 오자키와 그의 아내 카나코는 외견상 행복해 보이는 커플이다. 그러나 오자키와 사토미가 내연관계였다는 풍문이 돌고, 이들의 관계에 의문을 품은 기자 와타나베가 탐문을 시작한다. 조사 과정에서 와타나베는 오자키의 어두운 과거에 접근해간다. 훌륭하게 연출된 미스터리로 눈길을 끄는 의 근원적인 테마는 ‘행복이란 무엇인가’이다. 지극히 평범한 주제지만 주제를 요리하는 방식은 평범하지 않다. 오자키와 카나코의 스토리가 던지는 핵심 질문은 그들이 행복을 위해 함께 살고 있는 것이 아니라는 사실이다. 오모리 타츠시 감독은 상식과 이성으로는 잘 설명되지 않은 인간 심리의 층위와 현실의 복잡성을 잘 형상화해냈다. 2013년 모스크바국제영화제에서 심사위원대상을 수상한 작품이다.

Kazu attacks a bar in Kabukicho, a Tokyo red-light district, and flees to his hometown with abducts Machiko, a pole dancer he's been stuck on. They begin living together, but their happiness is short lived as their pasts torment them both.

루이는 친구와 클럽에 갔다가 위기에서 처하고 이를 본 아마는 그녀를 구한다. 아마는 문신과 ‘스프릿 텅’을 한 피어싱을 즐기는 사람이었고, 루이는 그런 그에게 묘한 매력을 느낀다. 아마의 적극적인 구애로 둘은 동거를 하게 되고, 피어싱과 문신에 관심을 갖는 루이를 자신의 단골가게로 데려가는 아마. 그 곳에서 문신사 시바를 만난 루이는 문신을 해주는 대가로 시바와 SM을 즐기며 정사를 치른다. 그 후로 그들은 가끔씩 만나 사랑을 나누지만 아마는 그 사실을 눈치 채지 못한다. 그러던 중 아마는 전에 클럽에서 루이를 돕다가 사람을 죽인 일로 수배를 당하고 어느 날부터 집에 들어오지 않게 된다. 그제서야 루이는 아마의 빈자리를 크게 느끼며, 아마를 사랑하고 있다는 사실을 깨닫는다. 그녀는 아마를 찾으려고 수소문하지만 찾지 못한다. 그 후 아마는 누군가에게 살해당한 시체로 발견되고 루이는 시바와 함께 지내게 된다. 그러다 아마를 죽인 사람이 시바라는 것을 어렴풋이 알게 되나 그 사실을 혼자 간직하고 아마와의 사랑을 가슴 속에 묻는다.

Junko and Kohei were each other's first relationship, and got married. A white apartment, a white blouse, and white underwear; their relationship was pure. Chiho has prohibited her husband, Takahashi, from smoking while she is trying to become pregnant. Takahashi hasn’t told his wife he was laid off, and has a paid sexual encounter with a high-school student, attracted by the pungent odor of her cigarettes, Peace Regulars. That evening, Chiho became outraged by the foul odor of the Peace Regulars saying it reminded her of an elderly relative having shoved the same brand of cigarettes into her genitals in the distant past. In fact that memory was not Chihos, but that of her twin sister, Kaho.

Before going, he makes a surprising suggestion, “Why don’t you guys go somewhere for New Year’s?” Yoko and Shinichi are suddenly faced with the prospect of New Year’s apart from their son. How will this couple, who’ve already lived half of their lives, change their behavior when it’s just the two of them?
