프란체스코는 고향을 파탄에 빠뜨린 전쟁에서 고통과 비리를 느낀다. 감옥에 들어간 프란체스코는 영혼이 산산조각이 났다고 믿고 있던 중 출감시 한권의 책을 들고 나온다. 복음서였다. 그는 그 책속에서 영혼의 구원을 얻는다. 전 재산을 처분해 불쌍한 사람들에게 나눠주려는 프란체스코를 처음엔 경멸하던 사람들이 점점 호응을 하게 되고 특히 그의 어릴 적 여자친구 키아라는 그를 헌신적으로 도와준다. 교황을 알현키 위해 로마를 떠난 프란체스코를 따르는 신도들이 급증하고 그는 자기희생과 금욕적 생활의 화신이 된다. 마침내 그는 죽고 사도들은 성프란체스코가 생전에 남긴 업적과 행위를 기리며 회상에 잠긴다.

Piera is a young woman who grows up under the parentage of two extremely original overseers: both her mother and father have incestuous relations with her before they are committed to insane asylums.
