The Herlihys are a working class family from Chicago whose three children take wildly divergent paths: Brian joins the Marines right out of High School and goes to Vietnam, Michael becomes involved in the civil rights movement and after campaigning for Bobby Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy becomes involved in radical politics, and Katie gets pregnant, moves to San Francisco and joins a hippie commune. Meanwhile, the Taylors are an African-American family living in the deep South. When Willie Taylor, a minister and civil rights organizer, is shot to death, his son Emmet moves to the city and eventually joins the Black Panthers, serving as a bodyguard for Fred Hampton.

A rocket containing bio-hazardous material to be disposed of by launching into space crashes in a remote wooded area. An army team is sent to recover it. One of the men is infected and mutates into a monster, killing most of the rest of the team. One man escapes with the help of a brother & sister who live in the woods. He then tries to stop his former buddy, while also fighting against another army team sent in to destroy everything. The bio-material was supposed to create a super-soldier, was banned, and the crash of the rocket appears to have been deliberate so the experiment could proceed. But who is behind it all? And will others be infected?

When the film failed to generate sufficient interest, the three tales were re-edited and shown as "Crypt" episodes.

강력반 형사 존 햇처(John Hatcher: 스티븐 시걸 분)는 멕시코에서 마약 단속 임무 중 동료 치코의 죽음을 계기로 자신의 직업 수행이 범죄인들과 다를 바 없음에 회의를 느끼고, 은퇴를 결심하여 고향으로 돌아온다. 그러나 그의 고향 마을도 이미 자마이카 출신의 광신적 마약업자인 스크루페이스(Screwface: 바실 윌란스 분) 일당에 의해 깊이 황폐해 있음을 알게 된다. 친구 맥스(Max: 케이스 데이비드 분)와 회포를 풀던 술집에서 햇처는 콜럼비아 갱단과 자마이카 파의 영역 확장을 위한 총격전을 목격하고 그 와중에 자마이카 파의 마약 판매책인 몽키를 경찰에 넘긴다. 부하들을 잃은데다 사사건건 자신의 일을 방해받던 스크루 페이스는 햇처와 그의 가족을 몰살하기 위해 부두교의 죽음의 표적을 그의 집에 남긴다. 다시 그들과 싸우려하지 않던 해쳐는 어린 조카 트레이시(Tracey: 다니엘리 해리스 분)의 부상으로 스크루 페이스 집단을 응징하러 나선다. 부두교에 관해 인류학 여교수인 레슬리(Leslie: 조안나 파쿨라 분)의 도움을 받고 스크루 페이스를 쫓아 자마이카로 떠난다. 자신이 직접 제작한 최신의 무기와 달인 경지의 오리엔탈 무술로 무장한 햇처는 풋볼 코치인 친구 맥스와 스크루를 쫓는 자메이카 형사 찰스(Charles: 톰 라이트 분)와 함께 스크루 페이스의 은거지로 잠입하여 일당을 소탕한다.

1914년 7월 4일, 미국의 독립기념일이기도한 이날 샘 크리친스키는 미국에 도착한다. 독립을 기념하는 화려한 불꽃놀이가 마치 자신의 미국 이민을 축하해주는 것처럼 느끼며 '샘은 미국에 왔다!'를 다시 한번 되뇌인다. 세 명의 형들과 도배공으로 일해온 샘은 이제 손주들에게 자신이 미국에 왔을 때의 이야기와 살아온 나날들을 옛날 이야기처럼 들려준다. 이민 3세대를 이루고 있는 이들은 안정적인 삶을 영위하며 추수감사 절마다 모든 가족이 모여 식사를 나눈다. 그리고 큰일이 있을 때마다 가족회의를 거쳐 어려운 가족을 돕기도 하고, 어떤 자선단체에 기부할 것인지도 의논한다. 하지만 형들과의 다툼으로 서로 왕래도 하지 않게 되고, 아들 줄스의 대형 할인마트가 화재로 모두 소실되는가 하면 항상 옆에 있으리라 생각했던 아내가 저 세상으로 떠난다. 하지만 이 모든 어려움은 따뜻한 가정 안에서 모두 극복된다.
