Story
Lucius Merrimore is the wealthy owner of a mine called "the Gold Girl," and as a result his daughter, Helen, has an endless number of suitors. Needless to say, she gets tired of being courted only for her money, so she attends a party under an assumed name. There she meets Schuyler Livingstone, and they are immediately attracted to each other. What Helen doesn't know is that her father has paid Livingstone to marry her.
Theatre Play
Lieut. Ralph Harrison is in love with Major Marston's wife, who pretends to love him. Harrison's mother implores Capt. Jim Craig to intervene to save her son from dishonor. When Craig visits Mrs. Marston, Harrison appears, precipitating a quarrel during which Harrison is wounded in the shoulder. Craig then leaves, and the major discovers Harrison. The major kills Harrison, and places the blame on Craig. To avoid a scandal, Craig runs away. Madge Summers of the Secret Service tracks him down and the two fall in love, but Craig is arrested and taken back to the army post.
Novel
A young girl, Anemone ( Mary Pickford ), who lives with her Aunt ( Ida Waterman ) is abducted by a crude family of Virginia mountain moonshiners. A fight between two of the young male relatives decides who will marry the girl. Lancer ( James Kirkwood ) is the winner and marries Anemone against her will. She is reunited some time later with her Aunt, but when she learns Lancer is in dire trouble she returns and stays by his side, realizing she had always been in love with him.
