나치 독일 점령 중인 네덜란드의 쌍둥이 자매의 체험을 그리고 있다. 1926년 독일 쾰른. 부모를 잃은 쌍둥이 자매, 안나와 롯데는 독일 농민의 집과 네덜란드의 유복한 가정에 각각 따로 입양된다. 따로 따로 떨어져도 서로를 그리워하는 두 사람. 롯데는 안나에게 편지를 계속 쓴다. 그러나 그 편지는 양부모에 의해 몰래 처리된다. 서로 상대방이 죽었다고 알려 준대로 성장한 둘, 그러나 안나가 살아 있다는 것을 알게 된 롯데는 그녀를 찾아가 애끓는 상봉을 한다. 그러나 그것도 잠시, 그들에게는 더 가혹한 운명이 기다리고 있는데...
