1943년 스코틀랜드 아우터 헤브리디스 제도의 '토디 섬(Island of Todday)' 사람들은 전쟁 때문에 위스키 공급을 제대로 받지 못해 모두 절망에 빠져 있었다. 이 와중에 영국군 상사 '오드'는 섬에 돌아와 이 지역에서 우체국을 운영하는 조셉 마크룬의 딸 페기에게 청혼을 하고 온순한 학교선생님 조지 캠벨을 마크론의 둘째 딸과 결혼을 약속하지만 엄하기로 소문난 그의 어머니는 결코 이 결혼을 허락하지 않을 기세다. 안개가 자욱한 어느 날 밤 화물선 '캐비넷 미니스터'호가 좌초되어 바다에 떠 있자 마을 사람 비퍼와 샘이 배를 저어 화물선에 다가가고 화물선을 탈출하여 나오는 선원들로부터 이 배에 5만 상자의 위스키가 실려 있다는 소식을 듣는다. 둘이 황급히 달려가 이 소식을 마을 사람들에게 전하자 모두는 기쁨을 감추지 못한다. 독선적이고 위압적인 이 섬의 지역방위군 지휘관 '왜거트' 대위는 이 사실을 알고 오드 상사에게 화물선을 철저히 감시하라고 지시하지만 우체국장 마크룬은 이 섬의 오랜 전통에 의해 위스키가 없이는 결혼식 파티를 열 수 없다는 사실을 오드 상사에게 귀뜸해 준다. 위스키가 없으면 결혼도 할 수 없다는 생각을 품게 된 오드 상사의 묵인 하에 마을 사람들은 보트를 타고 난파선에 다가가 엄청나게 많은 양의 위스키를 실어내 오고 덕분에 위스키를 잔뜩 마신 학교선생님 캠벨은 술의 힘을 빌어 고집 세고 터프한 어머니에게 용감히 맞서 카트리나와 결혼을 선언한다. 드디어 캠벨과 오드 상사의 결혼식 파티가 벌어지고 마을 사람들은 넘쳐나는 위스키와 함께 흥겨운 파티를 마음껏 즐긴다. 한편 섬사람들이 위스키를 몰래 빼냈다는 사실을 알아차린 왜거트 대위는 본토의 관세청 관리와 함께 위스키를 찾아 나서고, 마을 사람들은 결혼식 파티를 일단 중지하고 위스키를 감추기 위해 그들과 한판승을 벌이는데...
