제 1차 세계대전이 끝날 무렵. 프랑스인 마띨드는 전쟁에 참가한 자신의 약혼자 마네끄가 군법재판소에서 사형 언도를 받고 동료 죄수 네 명과 함께 적군과 아군 사이의 비무장 지대에 버려졌다는 사실을 전해 듣는다. 살아남았을 가능성은 전혀 없다는 사실과 함께. 사랑하는 사람의 죽음을 인정할 수 없었던 마띨드. 마네끄의 생사여부를 밝히기 위한 그녀의 길고도 힘든 여정은 그때부터 시작된다. 마띨드는 마네끄의 마지막 며칠에 관한 사실을 밝혀나가면서 사람들로부터 조금씩 다른 증언을 듣게 되고, 그때마다 절망에 빠진다. 그러나 그녀는 희망의 끈을 놓지 않는다. 그래야만 살아날 힘이 생기기에… 선천적으로 낙천적인 성격의 마띨드는 약혼자가 분명히 살아있다는 믿음을 가지고 주변 사람들을 설득해 마네끄의 행적을 찾아 나선다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 다섯 명의 사형수가 겪은 엄청난 시련이 점점 모습을 드러내고, 마띨드는 전쟁이 수많은 사람들에게 남긴 여러 모습의 비극을 지켜보게 된다.

Set in a forlorn mining town near Valencienne in the north of France, the story is about one man's struggle to bring life to his once prosperous village and its inhabitants. Philippe Torreton, who won a César for Best Actor with his title role in Capitaine Conan, plays Daniel, the head teacher of a nursery school in a town demoralized by unemployment. Daniel is determined against all odds to bring life to the community. When a parent who has come to pick up her children collapses at the school grounds due to alcohol abuse, and social services turns a deaf ear to all pleas for help, Daniel decides to take the law into his own hands. Despite resistance from the townspeople, in the long run his efforts are not fruitless.

A series of seemingly unconnected events and 50 important speaking parts make this film a jigsaw puzzle to be solved by the viewer. Martin and Claire were separated in childhood, and are brought together by a series of coincidences. A tragic car crash is central to the story, but seemingly unimportant events can hold great significance. Through a montage of different film stock and techniques director Diane Bertrand creates pieces of a puzzle, from which the viewer has to piece together a story.
