The Oresteia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus in the 5th century BC, concerning the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra, the murder of Clytemnestra by Orestes, the trial of Orestes, the end of the curse on the House of Atreus and the pacification of the Erinyes. The trilogy—consisting of Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides—also shows how the Greek gods interacted with the characters and influenced their decisions pertaining to events and disputes. The only extant example of an ancient Greek theatre trilogy, the Oresteia won first prize at the Dionysia festival in 458 BC. The principal themes of the trilogy include the contrast between revenge and justice, as well as the transition from personal vendetta to organized litigation. Oresteia originally included a satyr play, Proteus, following the tragic trilogy, but all except a single line of Proteus has been lost.

A vision of Jesus sighted on the screen door of Mother Harper's front porch sparks misadventures as the media and crowds gather around the phenomenon and the townsfolk start to take sides. This bold, new look at the play highlights one of its major themes of “otherness.”

테러리스트 사이먼(제레미 아이언스)은 뉴욕 곳곳에 폭탄을 설치해 놓고 맥클레인(브루스 윌리스) 형사에게 복수를 시작한다. 사이먼은 맥클레인이 1편에서 죽인 테러리스트의 형. 초등학교에 설치된 폭발물을 찾기 위해 온 뉴욕의 경찰들이 동원되는 동안 사이먼은 연방 은행의 금괴를 털어 유유히 사라진다. 사이먼의 계획을 눈치 챈 맥클레인은 도주 중인 사이먼의 배에 타지만 오히려 폭발물이 잔뜩 실린 배에 갇히게 된다. 구사일생으로 탈출한 사이먼은 진짜 금을 숨겨놓은 사이먼의 아지트를 찾아내고, 맥클레인과 사이먼의 마지막 혈전이 벌어지는데...

워싱톤 DC의 한 호텔에서 누군가를 기다리는 다비 쇼(Darby Shaw: 줄리아 로버츠 분)는 자신이 아직도 살아있다는 안도의 숨을 쉬기도 전에, 또다시 그녀의 눈앞에서 사람이 살해되는 것을 보게 된다. 그녀를 죽이려는 살인 청부업자는 그녀에게 점점 접근해오고, 다비는 더이상 달아날 수도, 숨을 수도 없다는 것을 안다. 이런 긴박한 상황과 공포에 지친 다비는 그레이 그랜섬(Gray Grantham: 덴젤 워싱톤 분)이라는 워싱톤 헤랄드 기자에게 도움을 청하게 된다. 그레이는 호기심이 많고 무언가를 케내기 좋아하는 기자인데, 다비는 그에게 대법원 판사 암살사건에 대한 브리프(문서)의 내용을 이야기해준다. 거기에는 사건의 배후인물과 그 사건을 은닉시키는데 정부 고위층까지 연루되어 있다는 사실이 적혀 있었다.

변호사 루이는 아름다운 코린과 결혼, 행복한 신혼생활을 보내던 중, 교통사고를 당하게 된다. 저승에 간 루이는 천사장에게 아내가 임신했다며 돌려보대달라고 사정, 알렉스라는 아이로 환생하게 된다. 그런데 다시 환생하기전 누구나 다 맞는 "전생을 기억하지 못하는 주사"를 맞지 않고 다시 환생하여 예일 대학에 다니는 알렉스는 우연히 도서관에서 미란다를 만나게 된다. 알렉스는 졸업 후 신문기자가 되기 위해 워싱턴 포스트지의 브래들린 국장을 찾아가지만 거절당한다. 루이와 가장 친하게 지내던 포스트지의 신문기자 필립은 루이가 죽은 후에도 계속 코린과 그의 딸 미란다를 돌봐주는데, 브래들리에게 거절 당하는 알렉스를 보고는 도와줄 마음이 생겨 코린의 집으로 데려온다. 집에 도착한 알렉스는 그때부터 전생에 대한 기억이 되살아나기 시작하고 코린을 본 순간 자기가 그의 남편 루이였음을 알게 된다. 틈틈히 기회를 보던 알렉스는 코린에게 자가가 남편 루이였음을알리는데 성공한다. 맨처음에는 어리둥절 하던 코린도 알렉스를 남편 루이라고 인정하고받아들이는데, 그때 영문을 모르는 필립이 나타나서 알렉스에게 대발한다. 알렉스에게 얻어 맞고 쓰러진 필립을 보고 코린은 비로소 자기가 필립을 사랑하고 있었음을 깨닫고 두사람은 결합한다. 한편, 알렉스는 죽던 날, 불충분하다는 이유를 내세우던 마피아단의 보니노를 풀어준 펜윅 판사가 뇌물을 받는 장면을 사진에 담아 밝히려다 쫓겨나는 바람에 층계에서 굴러 떨어져 혼수상태에 빠진다. 병원에 입원한 알렉스에게 천사가 내려와 전생을 기억하지 못하는 주사를 놓는다. 이제 알렉스는 전혀 전생을 기억 못하는 상태로 다시 회복해서 코린의 딸 미란다와 결혼하는데..
