에드 애버리(제임스 메이슨 분)은 돈과 미래에 대한 걱정으로 하루하루를 사는 작은 마을의 교사이다. 그는 가족들 몰래 부업으로 택시회사의 배차업무를 맡아 여분의 돈을 더 벌지만 결국 그의 아내(바바라 러쉬 분)에게 그 사실을 들키고 만다. 아침 저녁으로 일한 탓에 스트레스와 과로가 쌓여 결국 병원 신세를 지게된 에드는 스테로이드를 처방받게 된다. 에드는 스테로이드를 복용한 후로 약물이 가져다주는 행복감에 중독이 되어 간다. 그것은 서서히 에드를 신경직적이고 과대망상에 빠진 폭군으로 변하게 하는데...

After getting nowhere with the authorities, she is led by some underground characters to an American soldier of fortune working in the area against the Communists. He promises to help find her husband.
