중국 전통 천극의 레퍼토리로 눈 깜짝할 사이에 얼굴의 가면을 바꾸는 기술인 변검의 명인 왕씨(주욱)는 원숭이 한 마리를 데리고 떠도는 이름 없는 예술가. 그의 슬픔은 변검술을 물림할 아들이 없는 것이다. 남자에게만 기예를 전하겠다는 그는 인력 시장에서 사내 아이인 줄 알고 구와(주임영)를 산다. 어느 날 부상을 입은 변검왕은 약으로 쓰기 위해 구와에게 상처에 오줌을 누라고 하지만 구와는 안된다고 울부짖는다. 이 때문에 구와가 여자라는 것이 밝혀지고, 변검왕이 구와를 버리고 떠나려 하던 중 구와가 물에 빠지고 만다. 결국 구와를 구해 같이 지내게 된 변검왕은 구와에게 집안 일과 돈벌이를 위한 기예를 가르친다.
Lighting Design
Devout Buddhists, Norbu and Dolma live with their young son Tashi in a clan in Tibet. Norbu is a highwayman. After Norbu is charged with stealing from the temple, he and his family are banished. Impoverished and marginalized, they can do little when their beloved son becomes ill. Tashi dies of a fever. After a second son is born, Norbu focuses his every action on keeping this child alive, seeking re-admission to the clan for his wife and child, then risking all to save them from isolation and starvation in winter.

A married village worker teams up with an old girlfriend to try to dig a well for his water-starved village. The well collapses and they are trapped. Their enforced confinement leads to them exploring their feelings for each other and those around them.
