미국의 인공위성 ‘SE2020’이 괘도를 이탈해 상공에서 폭발하고 그 잔해가 호주 영토로 떨어진다. 이 인공위성의 블랙박스 ‘비콘’에는 군사기밀사진이 담겨있다. 미국의 CIA에서는 특수요원 휠러와 아서를 그곳에 급파해 사라진 비콘을 추적하고, 국립정찰국에서는 자신들의 임무를 CIA에서 가로챘다고 여기며 요원 조 버클리를 호주로 보낸다. 사실 호주에 떨어진 비콘은 거대한 악어가 이미 꿀꺽한 상태. 호주에서는 신경질적이고 억척스러운 농장주 브로지가 가축을 잡아먹는 나쁜 악어를 죽이려고 혈안이 되어있고 이를 안 야생동물보호국 직원은 악어사냥꾼 어윈스에게 악어를 잡아 다른 곳에서 풀어달라고 부탁한다. 호주 전역을 누비고 다니는 야생동물 보호가이자 악어사냥꾼 어윈스는 브로지의 농장이 있는 강에서 문제의 악어와의 사투를 벌이고 결국 악어를 생포해 큰 강가에서 풀어주기로 한다. 휠러와 아서, 조는 신호기를 따라 비콘을 추적하다가 어윈스의 차에서 그 신호가 오는 것을 발견하고 그를 추적한다. 한편 정부에서는 기밀지역만을 탐험하고 다니는 어윈스를 스파이로 오인하고 조사에 착수한다. 낯선 자들이 자신을 추적하는 것을 눈치 챈 어윈스는 그들이 악어를 훔쳐가려는 밀렵꾼으로 오해하고 그들을 따돌리려고 안간힘을 쓴다. 그 와중에 악어의 배설물에서 비콘을 발견한 어윈스. 그러나 그는 이것이 무엇인지 알지 못하는데...
