엘리우는 공범인 친구와 깊은 정글에 위치한 소년원에 도착한다. 교화 시설의 외양과 달리, ‘약물중독, 사기, 도둑질, 살인’의 범죄를 자인한 촉법소년들은 사슬에 묶인 채 강제노역에 동원된다. 낮에는 괴이한 정신수양 훈련에 참여하고 늦은 밤에는 옹기종기 모여 ‘끗발이 죽여주는’ 약물에 대해 이야기한다.
