어린 시절부터 ‘머펫 쇼’를 좋아하던 월터와 게리. 친한 친구 한명 없이 오직 동생 게리만을 친구로 둔 월터는 동생 게리와 그의 여자 친구 기념일에도 같이 여행을 가야하는 불쌍한 처지다. 로스앤젤레스로 여행을 가는 게리와 메리의 기념 여행에 동참하게 된 월터는 머펫 스튜디오에 방문할 생각에 들뜬 마음을 감출 수 없다. 이제 폐허가 되다시피한 머펫 스튜디오에 도착한 월터와 게리, 메리는 실망을 감추지 못하고, 월터는 우연히 머펫 쇼의 메인 호스트인 커밋의 옛 사무실에서 석유왕 텍스 리치맨이 이 스튜디오를 인수해 유전 사업을 시작하려는 음모를 듣게 되는데...
