교향악단 지휘자 클로드 이스트맨(Claude Eastman: 더들리 무어 분)에게는 자기보다 한 스무살쯤 어린, 젊고 예쁜 이탈리아 영화배우 아내 다니엘라(Daniella Eastman: 나스타샤 킨스키 분)가 있다. 어느날 클로드가 출장간 동안에 다니엘라를 잘 보살피라는 말을 감시하라는 말로 잘 못 알아들은 이탈리아인 집사 쥬세페(Giuseppe: 리차드 리버티니 분)와 친구 노먼(Norman Robbins: 알버트 브룩스 분)은 다니엘라에게 사설탐정을 붙여 감시한다. 그런데 사설탐정은 다니엘라의 아파트에서 한밤중에 남자가 나오는 장면을 목격하고, 이를 클로드에게 알린다. 그 남자가 자신의 제자인 바람둥이 미남 맥스(Maxmillian Stein: 아망드 아상테 분)라는 것을 알아낸 클로드는 격분한 나머지 다니엘라와 맥스를 둘 다 교묘하게 죽일 계획을 세운다. 그러나 현실은 상상할 때와 달라서 결국 그들을 죽이는데 실패한다. 한편 녹화된 감시 카메라를 다시 보던 사설탐정은 맥스가 다니엘라와 바람을 피운 것이 안, 노먼의 아내 칼라(Carla Robbins: 캐시 예이츠 분)와 바람피우는데 다니엘라의 아파트를 사용했을 뿐이라는 사실을 발견하고는 기겁을 해서 이 사실을 클로드에게 알리러 간다. 결국 다니엘라와 클로드는 탐정으로부터 자초지종을 듣게 된다. 다니엘라는 남편이 자신을 의심하고 죽이려고까지 했다는데 충격을 받지만 사랑으로 다시 화해하는데...

아름다운 아이레나(Irena Gallier : 나타샤 킨스키 분)는 부모가 의문의 자살을 한 뒤 고아원에서 자라다가 헤어져 살던 오빠 폴(Paul Gallier : 말콤 맥도웰 분)을 만나러 프랑스에서 뉴 올리언즈에 온다. 그런데 오빠는 여동생에게 이상한 주문을 해 이레나는 단호히 거절한다. 분노한 폴은 밤길로 뛰어나가 표범으로 변하고, 경찰과 동물원 원장 올리버(Oliver Yates : 존 허드 분)에게 잡혀서 우리 속에 갇힌다. 이레나는 오빠를 찾아나섰다가 동물원에서 일하는 앨리스와 젊은 원장 올리버를 알게 된다. 표범으로 변신한 폴은 사육사를 죽이고 동물원을 탈출한다. 폴은 아이레나를 따라 다니며 줄기차게 괴롭히지만 올리버의 도움으로 물리친다. 폴과 아이레나는 고양이 인간으로서 사람을 사랑하여 관계를 맺으면 표범으로 되고, 사람으로 변신하기 위해서는 형제 자매끼리 관계를 하거나 사람을 해쳐야만 한다. 아이리나와 올리버는 이 사실을 알게 되는데, 결국 폴은 올리버를 습격하다 사살되고 아이레나는 끝내 올리버를 사랑하여 표범으로 동물원에 갇히게 된다.
