AFI를 졸업하고 로저 코먼 밑에서 '노웨어 투 런', '풀 파덤 파이브'등의 영화를 연출하면서 사실감이 살아 있는 세미 기록영화스타일을 연마한 프랭클린은 범죄자들이 쫓기는 로드무비인 '광란의 오후'에서도 자기만의 개성을 보여준다. 영화는 LA 근교에서 시작한다. 레이와 플루토, 판타지아는 인간 말종 이라 불러 마땅한 강도들이다. 세 사람은 코카인을 훔치다가 살인을 저지르고 경찰에 쫓기는 신세가 된다. 각각의 장면 연출은 뛰어나지만 일부 플롯에서 이야기의 논리가 약해짐으로써 초반부의 힘이 떨어지는 게 흠이다. 레이 일행을 쫓는 두 베테랑 형사의 묘사가 엉성한 감이 있다. LA 경찰과 길 위의 레이 일행을 번갈아 보여주는 교차 편집으로 이야기를 펼쳐 가는데 군데군데 강도 높은 폭력묘사가 나온다. 배우들의 연기는 일급이다. 빌리 밥 손튼의 무명 시절 모습을 볼 수 있다.
