끝없이 펼쳐진 옥수수밭에서 기억을 잃은 간호사 샘이 깨어난다. 주위에서 총과 총탄 1개를 찾은 샘은 성냥통을 가진 타일러와 만난다. 함께 출구를 찾던 샘과 타일러는 아프가니스탄 참전 군인 라이언, 학생 이단 그리고 드니스와 마주친다. 이단이 가진 나침반을 따라 북쪽으로 향하던 샘 일행은 요란한 사이렌 소리와 함께 소름 끼치는 허수아비를 발견한다. 잠시 후 안경을 쓴 영국 여성 캐머런이 나타나 샘 일행과 합류한다. 그날 밤, 갑자기 출현한 사업가가 "나갈 길이 없다"라는 말을 남긴 후 낯선 존재에게 끌려간다. 혼자 도망치던 캐머런이 울타리에 찔려 부상을 입는다. 다음 날, 국방부 직원 드니스가 자신들이 정부의 실험 대상이라고 말한다. 혼자 몰래 물을 마시던 캐머런이 일행에게 발각된다. 사이렌 소리에 이어 드니스가 잡혀가고 그녀가 남긴 칼을 캐머런이 줍는다. 나침반이 수도꼭지를 위한 목적임을 알게 된 샘은 일행이 찾은 총, 성냥, 랜턴, 나침반, 칼, 물통에 숨겨진 기능이 있음을 깨닫는다. 허수아비가 쏜 주사 약물을 맞은 라이언이 변하기 시작한 후, 샘 일행은 낯선 괴물이 함정을 파고 자신들을 사냥하고 있음을 알게 되는데...
