A small town band makes it big, but loses track of their roots, as they get caught up into the big-time machinations of the music biz. Now, they must thwart a plot to destroy their home town. A small forest town is trying to promote itself as a place for tourists to come enjoy the therapeutic hot springs and unspoiled nature. Dr. Stockmann, however, makes the inconvenient discovery that the nature around the village is not so unspoiled. In fact, the runoff from the local tanning mill has contaminated the water to a dangerous degree. The town fathers argue that cleaning up the mess would be far too expensive and the publicity would destroy the town's reputation, so therefore news of the pollution should be suppressed. Dr. Stockmann decides to fight to get the word out to the people, but receives as very mixed reaction.

The residents of vacation spot Seal Island find themselves terrorized by a pack of dogs -- the remnants of discarded pets by visiting vacationers.

로스엔젤레스를 떠나 네바다를 거쳐, 콜로라도와 록키 산맥을 지나 캔자스, 미시시피강을 건너 시카고까지 가는 대륙 횡단 열차 실버 스트릭. 동생 결혼식에 참석하기 위해 이 시카고행 특급 실버 스트릭에 탑승한 죠지 칼드웰(George Caldwell: 진 와일더 분)은 우연히 알게 된 힐리(Hilly Burns: 질 크레이버그 분)란 여인과 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 힐리의 상관인 미술 사학자 슈레이너 박사가 살해당하는 사건이 발생하면서 '조용한 남자' 죠지는 복잡한 사건에 휘말려들어 삶과 죽음의 경계선을 자유자재로 넘나든다. 박사의 살해범인 악당 데브로우(Roger Devereau: 패트릭 맥구한 분)는 찾고 있던 '렘브란트의 편지'를 손에 넣자마자 죠지를 기차에서 내던져 버린다. 복수의 화신이 된 죠지는 악착같이 실버 스트릭의 뒤를 따른다. 어렵사리 힐리와 재회하여 그녀를 사랑하는 마음을 확인한 그는 FBI의 도움을 받아 데브로우를 체포할 기회를 잡는다. 그러나 데브로우의 완강한 저항 덕분에 수백 Km의 시속으로 달리던 실버 스트릭은 시카고 역구내로 돌진해 들어간다.

많은 죄를 짓고 수감중이던 맥머피는 교도소에서 정신 병원으로 후송되는데, 감옥보다는 자유로울 것으로 생각했지만 전혀 그렇지 않다는 것을 깨닫는다. 정신 병원의 여러 환자들과 생활하면서 맥머피는 그들이 겉으로는 전혀 문제가 없어 보이지만 보이지 않는 병원내의 압력에 의해 짓눌려 사는 죽은 인간들임을 간파한다. 그리고 그러한 압력의 주범이 간호사 레취드임을 알게 된다. 맥머피는 환자들을 끌고 병원을 빠져나가 낚시를 다녀오거나 파티를 여는 등 의도적인 반항을 시도하다 결국 탈출을 결심하게 되는데...

In a small Russian town at the turn of the century, three sisters and their brother live but dream daily of their return to their former home in Moscow, where life is charming and stimulating meaningful. But for now they exist in a malaise of dissatisfaction. Soldiers from the local military post provide them some companionship and society, but nothing can suffice to replace Moscow in their hopes. Andrei marries a provincial girl, Natasha, and begins to settle into a life of much less meaning than he had hoped. Natasha begins to run the family her way. Masha, though married, yearns for the sophisticated life and begins a dalliance with Vershinin, an army officer with a sick and suicidal wife. Even Irina, the freshest, most optimistic of the sisters, begins to waver in her dreams until, finally, tragedy strikes.
