크리스마스 이브날 아빠가 엄마, 아델(수잔 서랜드 분)과 심하게 다투고 집을 나간 뒤 딸, 앤(나탈리 포트만 분)은 엄마와 단 둘이 살게 된다. 엄마는 요란한 옷차림, 단정치못한 몸가짐, 그리고 폭포수처럼 쏟아지는 말 등 어른이라기 보다는 천방지축 아이와 같은 모습이다.
