선인 장도령은 그의 보검인 청강검을 등에 들쳐매고, 곤륜산에 가서 주형을 받을 적련군을 압송하다가, 예상치도 못하게 덫에 걸려 적련군이 이 틈을 타서 도망친다. 이로 인해 장도령은 사문에서 쫓겨난다. 장도령은 이때부터 천하의 평화를 지키기 위해 적련군을 쫓기 시작한다. 몇 년 뒤, 한마을에 도착한 장도령은 장례를 치르던 사람들이 흑백무상에 끌려가 다신 마을에 돌아올 수 없다는 사실을 알게 된다. 이는 적련군이 신공을 닦기 위해서는 많은 사람의 원신을 흡수해야 한다는 것을 알고 있었다. 실종자들은 적련군과 그 수하들에게 끌려가 죽음을 당했을 거라 추측한다. 장도령은 단서 하나라도 놓치지 않겠다는 집념으로 사소한 단서조차도 뒤쫓기 시작한다.
