자유유주의 사상에 경도된 석빈이 소련이 지배하는 북한 사회와 갈등을 겪다 남한으로 탈출하는 이야기다. 그 속에 석빈과 소련군 장교 시렌코프의 딸 쏘냐의 러브스토리와 석빈을 사모하지만 러시아 통역관으로 일하며 소련군에 몸을 바쳐야 하는 정숙의 사연이 더해지면서 멜로드라마적인 감정을 영화에 불어넣는다.
