미국과 소련의 냉전으로 핵무기 전쟁의 공포가 최고조에 오른 1957년, 보험 전문 변호사 제임스 도노반은 소련 스파이 루돌프 아벨의 변호를 맡게 된다. 당시 미국에선 전기기술자 로젠버그 부부가 원자폭탄 제조 기술을 소련에 제공했다는 혐의로 간첩죄로 사형된 사건이 있었다. 미국의 반공운동이 극에 달했던 단적인 예로 적국의 스파이를 변호한다는 것은 자신의 목숨은 물론 가족의 안전까지 위협받는 일이었다. 여론과 국민의 질타 속에서도 제임스 도노반은 “변론의 기회는 누구에게나 주어져야 한다”며 자신의 신념과 원칙에 따라 아벨의 변호에 최선을 다한다. 때마침 소련에서 붙잡힌 CIA 첩보기 조종사의 소식이 전해지고 제임스 도노반은 그를 구출하기 위해 스파이 맞교환이라는 사상 유래 없는 비밀협상에 나서게 되는데...

주인공 에릭은 오토바이 수리점을 운영하며 평범한 삶을 살고 있다. 대부분의 시간을 여자친구와 그녀의 딸을 위해 보내며 만사가 평화롭기만 하다. 늘 평온할 것만 같던 그의 삶에 어느 날 갑자기 헨리라는 이방인이 나타나 에릭의 삶에 관여하기 시작한다. 다른 사람한테는 보이지 않는 유령 같은 존재인 헨리의 등장으로 인해 에릭은 모든 게 혼란스러워진다. 헨리는 에릭에게 그가 기억하지 못하는 과거의 더러운 비즈니스에 합류하지 않을 경우 심각한 위험에 처할 것이라고 경고한다. 벼랑 끝에 몰린 에릭은 과연 다시 과거로 회귀할 것인가? 의지할 곳 없는 에릭은 점점 더 헨리에게 의지하게 되는데 과연 헨리가 믿을 만한 존재인가?

Heinz Gödicke (Ronals Zehrfeld) is the chief commissioner of the People's Police in the small town of Eberswalde in Brandenburg. Gödicke is called when two bestial murdered children are found in the forest. The investigator tries to get involved in the perpetrators - a rarely used method at the People's Police - and the perpetrator so on the track. The Stasi-Major Witt (Florian Panzer) is no friend of this procedure and leaves the commissioner only reluctantly free hand in the investigation. The matter does not go to the authorities fast enough and is then simply put to the files. When another murder occurs, it becomes clear that Gödicke was much closer to the enlightenment of the act than everyone thought.

The story opens with Bica, a solvent abusing waif, trying in vain to evade the Romanian police with her infant brother in tow. Separated from her sibling she is taken to Germany, concealed in the trunk of a car. There she is trained as a thief, picking the pockets of strangers to fill those of her patron. One of her victims is the separated father of Milka, a brat with razor sharp tongue. From this unlikely start a friendship forms and Bica gets a glimpse into a world of material security, if not emotional closeness...

2차 세계대전 당시 독일과 소련이 대치했던 스탈린그라드 전장. 독일군의 강력한 공격으로 소련군이 궁지에 몰린 상황에서 폐허가 된 전쟁터를 헤매던 소련 선전장교 다닐로프(조셉 파인즈)는 우연히 명사수 바실리(주드 로)의 뛰어난 저격솜씨를 목격한다. 저하된 소련군의 사기를 되살리기 위해 영웅이 필요하다고 판단한 다닐로프는 바실리를 전문적인 저격수로 만들고 전장에 뿌려지는 전단을 통해 전설적인 영웅으로 부상시킨다. 바실리의 뛰어난 솜씨로 나치 장교들이 하나하나 죽어가자 독일군은 역시 저격수인 코니그 소령(에드 해리스)을 내세워 바실리를 없애려 한다. 바실리는 코니그와의 숨막히는 전쟁에 빠져드는 동시에 타냐(레이첼 와이즈)라는 소련 여군 병사를 사이에 두고 다닐로프와 묘한 연적관계에 놓이는데...

Ein Pizzabäcker gibt seinem lustlosen Fahrer den Auftrag Pizzen auszuliefern. Die Bestellung haben zwei Polizisten aufgegeben, die ein Objekt überwachen. Sie planen den großen Coup, indem sie selbst das Geld der observierten Gangster nehmen und sich absetzen. Die Gangster selbst erwarten einen Drogendeal. Als der allerdings schief geht und die Polizisten auch hilflos dazwischen funken, sieht der Pizzabote seine Chance und verschwindet mit dem Geld.
