베로니카는 학교 화장실에서 임신 테스트하다가 지금은 사이가 소원해진 소꿉친구 베일리에게 그 사실을 들킨다. 다른 친구들이나 부모님에게 고민을 털어놓을 수 없는 베로니카는 혼자 임신 중절 계획을 세우지만, 미주리주에서는 부모 허락 없이는 임신 중절 시술을 할 수 없다는 사실을 알게 된다. 결국 베로니카는 자동차를 가진 베일리에게 부탁해 1,600km가 떨어진 뉴멕시코주 앨버커키로 임신 중절 시술을 받으러 떠난다.
