중년의 주부 로살바(리치아 마글리에타 분)는 가족 여행 도중 고속도로 휴게실에서 일행을 잃고 홀로 남겨진다. 집으로 돌아가기 위해 히치하이킹을 했다가 충동적으로 베니스로 목적지를 수정하고, 그곳에서 밤마다 자살 기도를 하는 냉소적인 아일랜드인 웨이터 페르난도(부르노 간쯔 분)를 만난다.
