16살, 질풍노도의 시기를 겪고 있는 리프는 집과 학교를 뛰쳐나가 기이한 쓰레기 도시에 이르고, 그곳에서 버려진 비닐봉지 배기를 만난다. 배기는 자신을 억압하는 이들로부터 탈출하고 동료들을 해방시키기 위해 리프에게 도움을 청한다.

Ko Chen-tung (You Are the Apple of My Eye, Road to Mandalay) and Angelica Lee (The Eye, The Garden of Evening Mists) make an unusual romantic pairing in this offbeat romantic comedy from director-cinematographer Chen Ta-pu. Ko plays Croc, a young gangster who goes back to work for his former boss at a city councilor’s office after his release from jail. Croc’s latest task is to deal with Ping, a headstrong farmer who adamantly refuses to give up her land for redevelopment. As Croc and Ping develop feelings for each other, Croc is determined to become a better man and hang on to his newfound happiness — even if it means defying his own mob.

In artist Su Hui-yu’s signature style, a moody slow-motion pan captures a wild, glitter-scattered, blood-splattered orgy during the Tang dynasty. The film is an invocation of scenes from 1985 Taiwanese cult film Tang Chao Chi Li that only existed in the screenplay, unfilmed until now due to what can only be imagined as budgetary restrictions and censorship pressures during the Martial Law era. Presented without narrative context, the orgiastic murder scene plays out like an unsettling nightmare.

영화나 소설에서나 보던 극적인 사랑은 잠시 접어두자. 이른 바 ‘생활형 사랑’이라고나 할까? 수자오렌 감독이 <17세의 꿈>에서 이야기하는 사랑이 바로 그런 것이다. 17살 고교생 샤오양의 주변에는 온통 사랑과 이별로 홍역을 앓는 사람들 뿐이다. 친구 샤오마는 애인 티안티안과 사랑싸움을 하고 있고, 누나 샤오랑은 실연당한 뒤 샤오양의 권유에 의해 아침식당을 운영하는 마이클과 다시 사랑을 시작한다. 주스가게를 운영하는 엄마는 옆가게 주인인 청년 아샨과, 인쇄소를 운영하는 아빠는 결혼을 앞둔 이웃집 처녀 샤오리와 점차 가까워 진다. 정작 이들을 바라보는 샤오양만 혼자이다. 그는 다른 사람의 연애편지를 전달해주고 읽는 것을 즐긴다. 사실 이들 모두는 아주 평범한 사람들이다. 샤오양의 가족 역시 별 문제가 없다. 그런데도 그들은 다른 사람들에게 눈을 돌린다. 그렇지만, 이들의 사랑이 지극히 현실적인 것처럼 보이는 것은 수자오렌 감독이 ‘사랑’을 ‘환상’에서 ‘현실’로 끌어내리고 있기 때문이리라.
