In 2009, actors Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deborra-lee Furness, traveled to Ethiopia as ambassadors for World Vision Australia, one of the world's largest humanitarian aid organizations. As longtime donors, the Jackmans wanted to visit a World Vision community development project to see how rural communities were being empowered to eradicate poverty. While in the Yirgacheffe region, Hugh met a 27 year-old coffee farmer named Dukale, working to lift his family out of poverty. 수줍음을 많이 타고 이상한 14살의 다니엘 홉슨(세바스찬 그레고리)은 선샤인 힐의 목가적이고 아름다운 동네에 사는 조용한 소년이다. 낡은 카메라 렌즈를 통해 세상을 보는 다니엘은 많은 이웃들과 마찬가지로 집에서 집으로 은밀히 퍼지는 불길한 소문 때문에 혼란스럽다. 10대 소녀 3명이 흔적도 없이 사라졌는데 경찰은 아무런 단서도 잡지 못한 상황에서 지역 주민들은 46번가의 허름한 집에 사는 이상한 여자를 의심한다. 이 영화는 수줍은 많은 14살 소년인 다니엘(Daniel)의 시점으로 선샤인 힐즈(Sunshine Hills) 교외지역의 은밀한 욕망으로 가득한 현실세계를 보여준다. 전형적인 미국식 중산층의 생활양식과 풍경들은 〈뷰티풀〉의 중요한 영화적 배경이다. 마치 〈블루 벨벳〉을 연상시키는 이러한 배경에는 교외지역의 한적한 일상들이 표현된 느린 화면과 클로즈업, 자연 풍경의 화려한 색감, 그리고 다니엘이 매일매일 지나가는 거리에서 던지는 시선들이 적절하게 배치되어 있다. 이러한 배치는 40년대 필름 느와르 스타일과 스릴러의 장르적 요소와 조화를 이루면서 모호하고 몽상적인 분위기를 만들고 있다. 〈뷰티풀〉은 14살 소년의 눈을 통해서 보여지는 어른들의 패티쉬적 환상에 다름 아닌 것이다. 우리는 하드 보일드류의 소설에서 상류층의 패티쉬적 취향의 분위기를 알고 있으며 그것은 항상 ‘훔쳐보기’의 원초적인 욕망으로부터 시작된다. 이 영화에서도 모든 인물들은 ‘훔쳐보기’의 주체이자 대상이다. 사진 찍기에 집착하고 17세 로리타인 수지(Suzy)의 성적 매력에 빠져드는 다니엘 자신도 ‘훔쳐보기’의 주체이자 대상인 셈이다. 결국 다니엘은 수지의 유혹에 끌려 위험한 게임에 동참하면서 밤의 은밀한 세계를 엿보게 되고, 자신이 상상했던 환상을 깨트리는 공포와 죽음을 발견하게 된다. 하지만 영화는 마지막 장면에서 현실세계의 진실에 대한 질문을 남긴다. 〈뷰티풀〉의 세계는 바로 온화함, 사랑스러움, 공포, 섹슈얼리티, 매혹적인, 몽상, 환상적인 순간들이자 회상과도 같다.(전성권)

어머니에게 버림받은 11살 소녀의 투쟁을 다룬영화

An elite group of vice cops are fired from the L.A.P.D. for being over-zealous in their war against drugs. It is immediately apparent that some of their superiors are involved in the drug ring.
