1980년 초, 마약 공급권을 두고 이탈리아 마피아의 신구 패밀리 사이의 갈등이 고조되자 토마소 부세타는 조직생활을 청산하고 가족과 함께 브라질로 떠난다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 마피아의 신진세력인 콜레오네파가 자신의 동료들과 일가친척의 절반을 살해하고, 팔레르모에 두고 온 두 아들마저 실종됐다는 소식을 듣고 절망한다. 얼마 후, 토마소는 브라질 경찰에 마약 거래 혐의로 체포되고 이탈리아로 송환이 결정되자 이탈리아 사법기관에 마피아의 모든 것을 폭로하려는 위험한 결정을 하기에 이르는데.
