빅토리아 시대 영국의 고생물학자 메리 애닝은 여성이라는 이유로 학계에서 인정받지 못하고 부유한 관광객들을 대상으로 화석 기념품을 팔며 노모와 함께 생계를 이어가고 있다. 한편, 부유한 관광객의 젊은 아내 샬럿 머치슨은 신경증 요양을 위해 메리에게 위탁하게 된다. 사회적 지위와 성격 차이로 부딪치던 두 여성은 어느새 서로의 외로움을 감싸주며 격렬한 열정의 소용돌이에 빠지게 된다.
