청각장애자였던 알렉시스는 열 살 때 가족들이 살해당하는 장면을 목격하면서 청력을 회복한다. 본능을 뒤흔드는 경험으로 알렉시스의 공감각 능력이 깨어나고, 신체가 훼손되는 끔찍한 폭력의 소리를 음악으로 옮기며 위안을 얻게 된다. 어른이 된 후 다시 청력을 잃을 가능성이 대두되자, 알렉시스는 소름 끼치는 살인 사건을 통해 명곡을 작곡하려고 마음먹는다.
