2차 세계대전이 한창인 1942년 여름, 미시시피 주의 작은 마을 야주. 윌리는 엄격하지만 자상한 아버지 잭과 엘렌 밑에서 외로이 자라는 수줍음 많은 소년이다. 친구가 없고 스포츠에 재능이 없는 윌리에게 유일한 친구는 마을 최고의 야구선수 딩크 뿐. 그러나 딩크조차 군에 입대하자 외롭게 된 윌리에게 어머니는 아버지의 반대에도 불구하고 강아지 한 마리를 생일 선물로 사준다. 윌리는 강아지에게 스킵이라는 이름을 붙여주고 스킵의 도움으로 친구도 사귀게 되고 학교에서 제일 이쁜 여학생인 리버스에게 말도 걸 수 있게 된다. 어느날 야구경기에서 삼진만 당하고 에러만 범해 짜증이 난 윌리는 스킵을 때리게 되고, 도망간 스킵은 공교롭게도 밀주업자가 술을 숨겨둔 묘지 속에 갇히게 된다. 스킵을 찾기위해 마을을 누비고 다니던 윌리는 딩크의 도움으로 묘지에서 스킵을 찾아내지만, 스킵은 밀주업자의 삽에 맞아 죽음의 위기를 맞이하는데...
