The story follows the team as they try to raid a tomb made by master tomb raiders.

During the period of the Republic of China, the reclusive descendants of Guanshan Taibao were ordered to investigate a case and solve the mystery of the "Nine Pavilions" of the Qianji Ancient Palace hidden under the mine disaster.

"Mojin: The Lost Legend" (aka "The Ghouls", a title which do the movie no justice at all) is definitely not a movie that you should let slip under your radar. I became aware of the movie because I am a fan of Shu Qi, so of course I had to watch the movie. And let me just say that this movie can essentially be summarized as a Chinese "Tomb Raider" movie, of sorts.

Based on Zhang Muye's novel "Fire God from Jiuhe". The story takes place in the Jiuhe city in the middle of the Republic of China. 1980년대, 모금교위란 신분을 숨기고 베이징 골동품 거리에서 노점상으로 생계를 유지하던 '후바이'와 '뚱보'는 '금니'와 함께 수많은 고분이 숨겨져 있다는 '용의 고개'로 탐사를 간다. 한편, 자신의 몸에 난 붉은 표식에 대해 알아보기 위해 미국에서 중국으로 돌아온 '셜리 양'은 표식에 관해 알고 있다는 쑨 교수가 용의 고개에 있는 어골묘에서 실종된 사실을 알게 된다. 어떻게든 쑨 교수를 찾아야 하는 셜리는 우연히 만난 후바이 일행과 함께 불길한 기운이 맴도는 어골묘에 들어가는데...

천여년의 역사를 지닌 도굴단체 '무금교위'의 82대 제자 후바이(천쿤), 왕카이슈안(황보), 셜리(서기)는 고분을 도굴하던 중 설명하기 힘든 환영을 보게 되고 이를 계기로 손을 씻게 된다. 뉴욕으로 떠나온 이들은 한 글로벌 광산회사로부터 중국의 '어떤 무덤'을 발굴해달라는 제안을 받는다. 거금에 혹해 홀로 중국으로 떠난 왕카이슈안은 '피안화' 석판을 발견하게 되고 후바이와 셜리에게 알린다. '피안화'는 고대왕국 공주의 상징으로 삶과 죽음을 연결한다는 전설의 꽃. 이들은 20년 전 불의의 사고로 죽은 딩(안젤라베이비)과 연관이 있음을 깨닫고 '어떤 무덤'을 파헤치기로 결심하는데...

1974년 쿤룬산 괴생물체 흔적 발견되고 상하이 고생물 연구소 양쟈린 교수와 749국 대원들은 대규모 탐사에 한창이다. 그러던 어느날 갑작스런 폭발로 생겨난 산 안쪽으로 이어지는 통로를 조사하기 위해 양쟈린 교수, 그의 딸 양핑, 후바이, 중대장 등으로 구성된 탐사대가 길을 떠난다. 본격적인 추적을 시작하려던 찰나 불박쥐의 공격에 탐사대원들 속수무책으로 죽임을 당하게 되고, 가까스로 목숨을 구한 양쟈린 교수는 마침내 '구층요탑'을 발견한다. 만여년전 지구상에 존재했던 외계 종족인 '귀족'이 남긴 유적이자 그들의 저주를 풀 수 있다는 전설로 내려온 '구층요탑'을 후바이와 양핑을 통해 열려던 양쟈린 교수의 계략을 눈치챈 중대장의 방해로 실패로 돌아간다. 설상가상 '구층요탑'의 기관을 잘못 건드리는 바람에 흩어져있던 '귀족'의 괴물이 깨어나 인류를 향한 무차별 공격을 시작되는데...
