A woman arrives home at the end of a regular day, but as she begins to turn in for the night, she is overcome with a sense of restlessness. Unable to fit inside her own world, she needs out of her life. In an instant, she goes back out into the night. Her journey around a mostly vacant city, obscured by darkness, cascades in space and time, away from one feeling and in search of another.

뉴욕 그린카운티. 허름한 모텔을 운영하는 클로이(앨리스 이브)는 어린 딸 소피아와 함께 산다. 어려운 형편에 하루하루가 힘든 클로이. 게다가 사회복지사는 모텔이 양육에 적합하지 않은 환경이라며 2주 안에 이사하지 않을 경우 소피아를 아동 보호 기관에 보내야 한다고 통보한다. 한때 살인청부업자였으나 이제 시력을 잃어가며 암흑가 검은돈을 운반하는 토포(브라이언 크랜스톤)가 클로이의 모텔에 묵는다. 그 날 밤, 운전을 맡았던 토포의 파트너가 모텔에 함께 투숙한 여자와 함께 시체로 발견된다. 그가 타고 온 지프는 경찰의 증거품으로 압수되고, 차 안에 숨겨둔 현금 뭉치를 찾아야만 하는 남자는 클로이를 협박한다. 돈을 가져간 사람은 클로이의 친구이자 비리 경찰인 빌리(로건 마샬 그린). 그를 추적해 돈뭉치가 든 가방을 찾아내지만, 그 과정에서 토포는 빌리의 부인을 죽인다. 토포는 돈 가방을 가지고 떠나고, 클로이는 경찰에게 모든 것을 털어놓는다. 의뢰인에게 돈 가방을 전달한 토포는 돈이 부족한 것을 알게 된 놈들과 격전이 벌인다. 구사일생으로 살아남은 토포는 다시 클로이를 찾아오고, 때마침 사라졌던 빌리도 모텔에 나타나는데…
