Bert Kalmar (February 10, 1884 – September 18, 1947) was an American lyricist, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
Kalmar, a native of New York City, left school at an early age and began working in vaudeville. He appeared on stage as a magician, comedian and dancer before switching to songwriting after a knee injury ended his performing career. By this time he had earned enough to start a music publishing company, Kalmar and Puck, where he collaborated with a number of songwriters, including Harry Puck (1891–1964) and Harry Ruby. The publishing firm also operated under the name Kalmar, Puck, Abrahams, Consolidated, Inc., the other named partner being Maurice Abrahams (1883–1931)
By 1918 Kalmar and Ruby had formed a permanent songwriting team. Together, they wrote the musical score for the Marx Brothers' stage production of Animal Crackers (1928) and subsequent film version. Their songs were also featured in the Marx Brothers' films Horse Feathers (1932) and Duck Soup (1933). Kalmar's partnership with Ruby was portrayed in the 1950 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical Three Little Words, starring Fred Astaire and Red Skelton. Kalmar did, however, occasionally work with Oscar Hammerstein II, Ted Snyder and other songwriters.
Bert Kalmar was married to Jessie Brown, with whom he had two children. The couple were later divorced. He died in Los Angeles, California and was interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Eddie and his Mexican friend Ricardo are expelled from college after Ricardo put Eddie in the girl's dormitory when he was drunk. Per chance Eddie gets mixed up in a bank robbery and is forced to drive the robbers to safety. To get rid of him they force him to leave the USA for Mexico, but a cop is following him. Eddie meets Ricardo there, Ricardo helps him avoid being arrested by the cop when he introduces Eddie as the great Spanish bullfighter Don Sebastian II. The problem is, the cop is still curious and has tickets for the bullfight. Eddie's situation becomes more critical, when he tries to help Ricardo to win the girl he loves, but she's engaged to a "real" Mexican, who is, unknown to her father, involved in illegal business. While trying to avoid all this trouble, Eddie himself falls in love with his friend's girl friend's sister Rosalie, who also want to see the great Don Sebastian II to kill the bull in the arena.

‘스펄딩’이라는 인물은 TV 프로그램에서도 등장했던 캐릭터로 잠시의 쉴 틈도 없이 움직이며 동시에 입을 놀림으로써 황당하면서도 통쾌한 웃음을 선사한다. 어느 날 리튼하우스 부인의 대저택에서 화려한 파티가 개최된다. 이 파티에는 탐험가 대장 지오프리티 스펄딩이 참가하며 또한 부유한 예술후원가 로스코 W. 챈들러가 보가드의 유명한 그림 ‘사냥후’를 파티장에 전시한다고 하여 더욱 화제가 되고 있다. 곧 파티가 시작되고 많은 사람들이 모여들면서 파티장은 소란스러워진다. 한편 이 곳에 온 그레이스와 존은 서로 사랑하는 사이이지만 아직 알려지지 않은 화가인 존의 경제능력이 없어 결혼을 하지 못하고 있는 상태이다. 그들은 존을 세상에 알리기 위해 존이 베낀 보가드의 ‘사냥후’를 몰래 진품과 바꿔치기 하기로 한다. 수많은 소동 끝에 그림을 바꿔치기 하지만 사람들은 곧 이를 알아차린다. 오랜 범인 색출 작업 끝에 경찰이 출동하기에 이르고 결국 사람들은 존과 그레이스가 한 짓이라는 것을 알아낸다. 하지만 사람들의 요청에 의해 경찰은 범인들을 너그러이 용서하고 존은 그의 그림 실력을 인정받기에 이른다. 과 함께 막스 형제가 브로드웨이에서 활동할 당시 인기를 끌었던 뮤지컬을 영화화한 작품. 영화는 아프리카 탐험가인 제프린 스펄딩을 주축으로 부유한 리튼하우스 부인의 저택에 초대받은 손님들과 사라진 그림을 둘러싼 좌충우돌을 유쾌하게 그렸다. 파라마운트사에서 제작한 막스 형제의 두 번째 작품이자 뉴욕 퀸즈의 파라마운트 아스토리아 스튜디오에서 촬영한 마지막 작품이기도 한다. 아스토리아 스튜디오의 일부는 현재 미국영상박물관(The American Museum of the Moving Image)로 사용되고 있다.
